56-bit symmetrical encryption has the final bullet put through it when Distributed.net completes the CSC challenge in 62 days, checking virtually every key in the process. It was only after the constant and repeated breaking of 56-bit ciphers that higher grade encryption was finally approved for export outside of the United States.
