200 million Android devices activated, over 550,000 activated everyday

All I know is I own 100 paid Android apps from Amazon and haven't spent a penny on one. I guess Apple fanbois would say that's a bad thing, because I didn't contribute to app revenues or profits. 🙂
I also have an Android phone that cost me $120, no contract, which they would say is also a bad thing because it makes Android's share of smartphone profits smaller.
All I know is I got me a smartphone and tonnes of apps for less than a dumbphone cost me before, and kept hundreds of dollars in my pocket instead of making Android's share of the profit pie bigger 😀

People are detracting from it tho. They are really missing the forest for the trees. The whole point of Android was to commoditize the smartphone market so it's kind of silly to then say that Android manufacturers making commodity profit margins is somehow a bad thing for Android.

We do benefit from it. A robust app store and great selection of apps is where we benefit. Developers go where the money is. That is why you don't see a Wal-mart on every street corner in Zimbabwe. It's a very good thing. Would you rather be looking for a good paying job in a shitty town in Arkansas or San Francisco? Businesses go where the money is. Is this really over your head?

From a business as well as a consumer standpoint, that is a good thing. A healthy ecosystem surrounding iOS devices means that there will be continued software development because developers can actually make a living. You either are ignoring, or clearly are not able to think things through and realize that it's not just Apple but developers large and small who benefit. Then there are the peripheral manufacturers who also benefit as well.

For consumers, it ensures that if you invest in the iOS platform, it won't die out on you in the near future. Not that I'm claiming Android will die out, it's simply too big and there's simply too much momentum. There's no denying that due to the fact that money can be made on the iOS platform, there are a large variety of software to suit almost all needs and tastes. As an example, some of the software I buy for my iPad and iPhone are not available on Android.

Good for you. Except that not everyone can make do with open source software. There are a lot of needs/wants that open source software does not satisfy. You're being derogatory and stereotyping a whole consumer group because you think they are wasting their money. As an example, I buy software on iOS that is simply not available on Android. And they are most certainly not available as open source on desktop OS's.

You're blinded and can't see that it's not black and white but that there are multiple shades of gray. Should people waste money? Of course not. You're stereotyping a whole consumer group because you think they're wasting money. You never even looked at what software was being purchased and why it was being purchased. I don't doubt that there is a ton of impulse and idiotic buys on the iOS side of things (yes, queue the fart apps) but there's certainly a lot of entertainment, edutainment, and productivity apps being bought as well.

Edit: Found a link that says google now makes ~2.5 billion (per year) from android. Not too shabby, but it still doesnt get even close to the profits apple makes off the iPhone.

What is your point? 2.5 billion per year is more than enough to keep them developing Android, which is all I as a consumer care about. Why would I care about these companies bottom line beyond that? I don't work there, who the hell cares.

The inference is that Google wouldn't have that $2.5 billion in revenue had it not released Android. I doubt their mobile ad impressions would be much different had they not released Android.

It's a very good thing, Apple fans aren't morns for buying good apps, Fandroid people always bring up "I get my apps for free! fux iOS LULZ!" But they never mention how the apps suck in comparison. I paid $150 for Microsoft Office, Open Office is free and technically works, but MS Office is just better. And us "morons" buying so many iOS apps is what's making the best developers make iOS apps. And even those who develop on both platforms, 95/100 times the iOS version will be anywhere from slightly to out of this world better. Apple isn't the only one making a killing here either, the developers are too. And since the Market ecosystem will never be this way, we'll always be lagging behind app wise, always. Believe me if I could get the same apps I have on iOS on my EVO, I mean same quality and everything I would GLADLY pay for them just the same as I gladly paid for them on my iPod Touch.

If I was a developer and I saw the way rabid fandroids on all the forums act like buying an app's the stupidest thing you can do in the world, and screaming out free free free every chance they got. I don't suspect I would be rushing to develop shit for their platform. And if I did develop it sure wouldn't be my top priority

You never know. If there was no Android and MS was the second major mobile platform, it would be locked to Bing and would impact Google's mobile business quite a bit. Plus it would give Apple leverage to milk Google, requiring that all ads in Google apps go through iAds. Leaving their mobile business up to Apple or MS was not a bet Google was ready to make.

Android has been steadily gaining market share, even though certain people here can't shut up about "fragmentation" or "poor quality apps", I guess it's not as big of a deal as they've been saying for 2+ years.

The iPad's price was disruptive at $499 at launch, remember all the tablets that died almost immediately and sent everyone back to the drawing board?

I'm not saying OMFG, teh iPhone is teh bestest deal ever, but you guys need to look critically at where the money on phones is made and where it goes. Everyone is critical of the blatant price fixing of cell contracts and data plans by the carriers, yet we just sign up for 2 more years of financial rape every time a contract expires.

It all boils down to what level of polish you expect from an app, if you don't want to spend money you get open office, if you want a program that feels like it was developed by a company and not some kid on sourceforge you go with MS Office. I don't have a problem with people who want free apps so they go with Android. I do find it funny however when they tell me their apps are every bit as good as iOS ones. To some of us polish matters, and while there are rare app here and there in the Market that have polish, most feel cheaply made, which explains why they're free. The adage you get what you pay for's definitely true here. And I'm an Android owner who would drop the kind of $$$ I did on my iOS device if I could get the same quality of app.

If you can't see the difference between Open Office & MS Office I don't know what to tell you. I'd respect the Apple haters much more if they just said "dude I'm fine using Open Office" and not try to tell me their Android device has MS Office quality apps when it clearly doesn't.
