That computer is probably past the point where its worthless and its started to accumulate value as a collectors item or something.

Since my T42 shit the bed, I had to break out the backup backup laptop, and I am now reading this thread on a Dell Latitude with a 650 mhz P3 and 256 mb of ram. As long as I'm not multitasking or using graphic/java/flash intensive websites, it works great. I can watch low def youtube clips, even. Some more ram and I'm sure it'd be fine for those too.

perhaps "quiet" for it's time?
i always thought floppy drives were noisy, then Amiga advertised a "quiet" one which was still within the noisy level.

Not really, some original mac's get made into "Macquariums", there worth about $100 otherwise a 1992 486-DX100 system is not a collectable at this point but if the woman using it likes the software on it and can use it for what she want's to do more power to her, it's just a shame she's missing out on the internet, I can't think of much modern software that would run on that machine..

To send a document, she probably has to print in on a dot matrix printer then scan it into copier to convert it to a pdf.

Sadly I've actually seen people do that LOL. That's worse than people who scan a picture, put it in a word document, zip it, and email it. Why not just send the picture itself? lol It amazes me how people will work harder than they have to sometimes.

I've got a 15 year old Mac clone in my basement. Back when Mac clones were a thing. There's an old Powerbook down there somewhere too. Most people don't need high powered computers to do what they do: word processing, web browsing, watching streaming video. Software has sort of plateaued.

Lightning hit a tree by my house when I was around 13. It arc'd over and took out our phones and a few other things. My computer failed to turn on after that...turns out it fried the NIC card.

Once that was out everything started right on up.

My point exactly. You confirmed that a lightning strike killed the stuff. A suppressible surge and a lightning strike are two very different things.
