There is about as much of a combat "system" here as there is in Unreal Championship, or Halo2, or any fps with a melee attack. Where are the damage numbers? Where is the accuracy? Mitigation? Avoidance? Confirmation that you actually hit your target? 3rd person mode helps in this respect, but that's about it. Morrowind had a huge map I think, and I got tired of flipping it out every 5 seconds. It's like driving to Vegas and taking the wrong turns. Not fun =P
Most of that stuff was in Morrowind, but players found it annoying. If you swing your sword, and it looks like it hits, then why aren't you hitting? I think Bethestda tried to remove the background dice rolls in the fighting so it actually feels more controlled.
