While looking for entry level jobs now, it seems most openings are for the senior level professionals.

Yep. Even though the market is picking up, there are still a lot of unemployed tech workers with lots of experience. So companies can afford to be very selective and take those with experience first. Hopefully, as more and more of these senior level people get hired, the market will open up more to those with less experience.

By the way, if you have any certs, DO NOT include them on your resume.

Was that last part about not including certs a joke? I know for certain that most companies look for certs, my mom was moving jobs as the company she was working for probably only had enough cash to pay her for 6 more months before going broke, and even though she has 15 years project management experience places would not hire her unless she got her project management certification, I mean it wasn't a problem to get it but still she HAD to have it, and I don't think certifications are inferred...

Developers who have a CS degree should not include certs on their resume, it makes you look bad in my opinion.

No I wasn't joking. There are plenty of differing opinions on certs. But the only opinion that counts in this case is Ameesh's since he is the one receiving the resumes. I knew knew his opinion on certs from the discussion in this thread

I know. I didn't mean it like that. With your background, you obviously know what you are talking about.
I just meant that there are others who disagree.
I'm sure it depends a lot on where you are applying.
If you apply for a development position at Amazon, MS, Oracle, Sun, etc., you are likely to be interviewed and have your resume screened by developers.
If you are applying at a non-tech job, you may have a non-technical manager reviewing your resume and doing the interviews, and they are the one's who are more likely to be impressed by certs.

I would say thats probably a pretty accurate statement. most developers would probably want to fish out your techincal prowess via some techincal interview rather then getting some paper that says you know some paticular subject very well.

Wish i had a bit more professional experience. Unemployed and missing Seattle. Graduating at the end of the dot-bomb sure hasnt helped.

Mind if we pass our resumes along in case something else comes up?

Thanks for keeping us all in mind Ameesh!

Bump!

hey ameesh, how important is putting your gpa on your resume? and if my major gpa is higher than my overall, should i just put my major gpa? my overall is 3.2 and major 3.4 btw. i put it on my resume anyway, but some say it hurts me since it's kinda low. but on the other hand, others say it would show that I'm trying to hide something bad.

Why would you put your GPA on your resume if you already have at least 3 years of job experience?

I would just take it off and if some one asks just tell them. its not such a big deal to have it on there.

what kind of work is this?

is this algorithms related or UA/front end

I have been mostly working in protocol stacks (all in C/c++ on solaris/pSoS (real time Operating system) ), not sure if my skills/exp match these openings

this is all backend c++ stuff, hardly any gui will need to be written by you, thats what the web devs are for.
