2 GB 1066 MHz OR 4 GB 800 MHz ???

32bit or 64bit OS???

Whats your Motherboard and your price range for memory. Are you looking at 4x1 gig or 2x2 gig set up as some mother boards don't play well with 4 sticks. And 3 gigs should be another thing to look at if you're running a 32bit OS as you won't be able to address all 4 gigs.

If you are going 64bit I suggest getting a 2x2 gig set up. If 32bit get either 2x1 or 2x1 + 2x512. What do you currently run on?
 
As has been said if you use 4GB use vista 64. It would be overkill for XP, plus XP 64 is not the most widely supported OS. Also what CPU are you going to be running? If you are not going to be using a CPU that can push 500Mhz FSB then it is a moot point anyways, just get the 800.

Even if only using XP (where you will only get to use ~3.25GB) I'd still recommend getting the max ram your system will let you use and then never having to wonder if your system would be any faster had you added more ram.

The cost is pretty minor these days (to go 2x2GB for example) and the extra ram can always be put to good use whereas I can't tell the difference on my computers whether I clock my ram at DDR2-533 or DDR2-1100.

I spent an extra TON of money to buy Mushkin redlines DDR2-1000 and honestly I would have never taken my own advice until I wasted the money and learned my lesson...but now I have learned my lesson and my advice is to not waste money on teh uber high clocking DDR2 unless you happen to know for sure you are going to use the extra super duper bandwidth.
 
I wasted a ton of cash on 4gb pc8500 memory which, in the 4x1gb configuration, ended up running at 915 . I am actually running an inexpensive 4x2gb setup right now at higher speeds with fewer crashes.

As long as it's a decent product I would go for more.

I went through similar experiences although at the time, 2GB sticks and 4GB kits were like $500 lol. But ya, the 1GB DDR2 1000+ kits didn't offer much, if any difference in performance and just ran hotter, much hotter at 2.2V+ stock voltage. Both 2GB kits died at least once on me. Went with these and have been VERY pleased, so much in fact I ordered a 2nd kit when they went on sale for $80 after MIR.

Btw Cheex you get yours in yet? 😀
 
Of course they can... P35 chipsets usually support DDR2 667-800-1066, so why not DDR2-1000? Look on Asus's website.

I have been saying the same thing for quite a while since RAM is so cheap. Even on a 32bit OS the extra RAM can be partially used. And, when/if you go to a 4gb OS you already have the 4gb. Once DDR2 prices start back up (as DDR3 matures, this will happen) DDR2 will never be this cheap again.

No not yet.

They should arrive in Jamaica by today so in another day or two I'll have it and the OCZ memory cooler as well.

Already cool sticks with a memory cooler can only mean one thing....overclocking goodness on these Micron D9 ICs.

The holiday period totally messed up my Ground Shipping so my stuff didn't make the flight.

Doh. 🙁 Ya the holidays between X-mas and New Years are a really dead time for business in the states. I don't mind though, I've had all week off. 🙂

Anyways, I decided to mess with RAM timings on a whim, got em down to 4-4-4-12 at 1.9V.

What about max overclock? How high are you able to take them and what voltage and timings?
 
If they're both the same price, I'd go with the 4Gb and overclock it to 1066Mhz. The extra memory will last you a loooong time. I have 4gb on Vista 64 and I can safely run with no pagefile. I've yet to see over 3Gb of usage, although that'll happen alot sooner than I'd like it to...
 
I am thinking of using CORSAIR XMS 4GB DDR-2 800MHZ PC-6400 (4 X 1GB) or KINGSTON 4GB DDR2 800MHZ PC6400 (4 X 1GB)
which is better? corsair is 40 bux costlier also...
The motherboard i am planning is Asus Striker Extreme Quad Core/ nForce 680i SLI/ DDR2-800/ A&2GbE/ ATX Motherboard
Also planning to get 2 8800 GT cards and work them in SLI mode...

This is true. Although I hope that when I'm ready to go to 8GB (4x2GB) I won't have the same problems as people do with 4GB (4x1GB).

Wishful thinking anyhow.

OCing RAM has caused me more problems than any other single element with the least return for the buck. Just get a decent 2x2GB kit for $70 and move on; you will have two free slots for the future and 2 sticks work better than 4.

IMO Super fast RAM is overrated and overpriced. Spend the extra cash on your PSU, video card or cpu.....


 
Hey there,

I am running my new 4GB 800 G.SKILLs now and I'm testing their highest stable clocks.


I'm running them right now on a 4:5 ratio @ 1000 with only 2.0V and that is pretty damn good if you ask me.
The chips are D9 so that's why they run at 800 with only 1.8V and can safely take around 2.2V if i'm not mistaken.


I can probably push these to 1066 with much problem and maybe even up to 1100 but I'm gonna take it slow.


What do you think?
