2.5" to 3.5" hard disk adapter question

Recently I was careless and impatient -- I fried a 4.5GB notebook drive by incorrectly connecting the adapter. It is one of those typical adapters seen here. So I want to make sure about this before I install my new Hitachi 40GB.

* The rightmost four pins that are separate are not to be connected
* Pin 1 is in the upper right of the 40 pins
* When connecting the IDE cable, should the notch be on the cable be upwards or downwards?

1. Correct. The 4 separate pins on the right as you look straight at the pins, are for the drive's jumper settings. As an example, I have mine in a mobile rack, and I set a mini-jumper on the rightmost pair of pins.

2. Correct. Pin 1 is on the upper right as you look towards the rear of the drive. Since I always look at the drive from the top with the pins away from me, all of the forementioned are on the left. 🙂

3. The notch on the cable goes UP. That puts the red edge of the ribbon on the pin 1 side.
