2.5" to 3.5" hard disk adapter question

Recently I was careless and impatient -- I fried a 4.5GB notebook drive by incorrectly connecting the adapter. It is one of those typical adapters seen here. So I want to make sure about this before I install my new Hitachi 40GB.

* The rightmost four pins that are separate are not to be connected
* Pin 1 is in the upper right of the 40 pins
* When connecting the IDE cable, should the notch be on the cable be upwards or downwards?

1. Correct. The 4 separate pins on the right as you look straight at the pins, are for the drive's jumper settings. As an example, I have mine in a mobile rack, and I set a mini-jumper on the rightmost pair of pins.

2. Correct. Pin 1 is on the upper right as you look towards the rear of the drive. Since I always look at the drive from the top with the pins away from me, all of the forementioned are on the left.

3. The notch on the cable goes UP. That puts the red edge of the ribbon on the pin 1 side.
