Just bought one for my home server. Micro Center lists the cache as 16mb, but Newegg's got it at 32mb (retail box, $85 after $5 rebate), so we'll see which one's right. 🙂 Not a big deal in a WHS configuration, I'd imagine.

I noticed this on a newegg review:

By default the drives have Automatic Acoustic Management (AAM) disabled. I jacked the setting up to its quietest level and poof - problem solved. (I used a free utility called HDDScan to adjust the setting.) This setting supposedly sacrifices seek speed for quieter operation, but I haven't noticed any adverse effect on performance, and I don't think it's any louder than my quiet old Seagates now.

Haven't tried it myself as it's external and only I only have it on a few times a week, but it's worth looking into.

I've had great experiences with Hitachi Laptop drives. They were on top of the laptop world for the many years with 7k60, 7k100, 7k200, 7k500s... now that SSDs are here, no longer needed.

But I have enough WD Blacks and Greens @ 1TB waiting to be filled.

The 32mb model is 7k1000.C drive, 2 platters and about even with the Samsung F3, which is the best 1TB drive out there afaik.

This is all off the top of my head, though, so I could me spreading misinformation.

The question of misinformation was over the specs I listed. If MC listed the cache at 16mb, I thought I might clarify the differences in the 2 models (16mb vs 32mb).

If its the 32mb model then, according to hitachi's site, it indeed the 7k1000.C. Congrats on nabbing the faster drive.

No, you are not spreading misinformation 🙂
You are correct in the specs 🙂 The 7K1000.B is 16 MB cache and 3 platters. The 7K1000.c is 32 MB and 2 platters, and neck and neck with the HD103SJ (Spinpoint F3 1TB) The 7K1000.c is quieter and cooler running 😉

Ahh...sorry...I read your post wrong then. Specs are right, but I was saying that you were wrong on the first part. These drives are not the 7k1000.B. They are the 7k1000.C, as every single box on the shelf at my local MC was the 32MB version.
