Their marketing towards human fear, the convenience is just an added bonus for those even considering purchasing.

I use ice to cool down flavored beverages so the taste argument does not apply for my case.

On health, I really don't think the hardness of tap water makes a big impact considering the amount of ice I use compared to other minerals that I may be ingesting from other sources.

WHY?

Just filter your tap water before freezing it...

The problem is not just with the tap water - its with the crap floating in your freezer. Your freezer contains a bunch of raw meats and uncooked foodstuffs, and particles of that can contaminate water sources.

Given the amount of time that ice has been used to cool beverages, you'd think there'd be more outbreaks of freezer-related salmonella then.

I'm all for running the tap through Mr. Brita before freezing, especially if you like to cool down drinking water in your glass. For flavored beverages, it makes way less of a difference.

The icemaker on our fridge at home has a charcoal filter canister to filter the water for the ice and drinking water.
It's gotta be just as good as this stuff.

Just more marketing to irrational fears.

Fact: Your tap water is more tightly regulated than any bottled water and therefore safer. If you don't like the taste of your local tap water (most places are fine) filter it.

If your fridge is dirty enough to make your ice taste funny, clean your damn fridge.

What a fvckin joke! I refuse to ever pay for ice unless my icemaker is not working at home. Even then I'll buy the BIG BAG for $1.99.

I don't know about that. A little town here in Central, IL (Farmington) just came off of a multi-week boil order. When I was growing up in Central,IL I remember multiple boil orders being issued. In my hometown a bunch of bugs got into the water supply and layed eggs and there were bugs coming out of peoples water lines. Not cool.

I know Dasani had a small incident in Europe, but in the US I've never heard of a bottled water boil order...let alone the number of incidents that just my small town had growing up.

You've never heard of a bottled water boil order because bottled water companies are virtually unregulated. Many have been found to have much higher levels of pollutants in them than is allowed in tap water.

At least the municipal water companies warn you.

At any rate, you can rest assured that when the boil order is lifted your tap water will be perfectly safe.

BTW, I live in central IL as well (Springfield). The tap water here tastes fine.

Bottled water is a scam.
