1984 is here, a bit late, but here

Was here a lot earlier my friend. Remember when they remastered ET and replaced the guns with walkie talkies. At least Spielberg admitted it was a dumb idea. 😛

Steven Spielberg said:
For myself, I tried [changing a film] once and lived to regret it. Not because of fan outrage, but because I was disappointed in myself. I got overly sensitive to [some of the reaction] to E.T., and I thought if technology evolved, [I might go in and change some things]…it was OK for a while, but I realized what I had done was I had robbed people who loved E.T. of their memories of E.T.

What people don't understand is that when brainwashing is here, people generally will FAVOR it.

Ever notice all these sci fi stories where tyranny has taken over a society are about one small group or a person who somehow appreciate 'freedom' and fight for it?

They pretty much wouldn't exist or be able to do anything about it. They'd be about as effective as an American deciding to help Al Queda defeat the US.

You can get a feel for this every time you point out lies a right-winger has fallen for, and see them just not able to deal with that. It's scary, but peope can buy into lies.

Paul Ryan writes a plan to end Medicare (with 'vouchers'), then says Obama is the enemy of Medicare and Ryan won't let him get away with destroying it.

The Obama plan has $716B in reduced spending Ryan attacks him for cutting; the Ryan plan has $716B in reduced spending he doesn't mention.

(Of course, attacking the Medicare program that helps so many Americans had a political price they didn't want to pay, so they have flip-flopped on some of the provisions).

How many Republicans are calling that a lie? Are concerned about it?

Hitler was pretty adored by a lot of the German people, who were similar to American people. That's a real lesson to learn from WWII. We haven't learned it.

People have tried to help educate; there was a book written titled "It can't happen here" in the 1930's about how fascism takes over the US, about a charismatic man (who reminds me a lot of Paul Ryan) , who gets elected by talking a lot about restoring 'traditional values', and then takes some strong measures.

Read the following summary, and then consider some of the similarites to today. It's not going to be 'right on' on each point, but it's shocking the number of direct comparisons.

Senator Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a charismatic and power-hungry politician, is elected President of the United States on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness, and promising each citizen $5,000 a year (approximately $80,000, adjusted for inflation[1]). Portraying himself as a champion of traditional American values, Windrip easily defeats his opponents, Senator Walt Trowbridge and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Though having previously stated that some authoritarian measures would need to be put in effect in order to reorganize the United States government, Windrip goes so far as to outlaw dissent, incarcerate political enemies in concentration camps, create a paramilitary force, called the Minute Men, who terrorize citizens and enforce the policies of Windrip and his "corporatist" regime. One of his first acts as President is to eliminate the influence of the United States Congress, which draws the ire of many citizens as well as the legislators themselves. The Minute Men respond to protests against Windrip's decisions harshly, attacking demonstrators with bayonets. In addition to these actions, Windrip's administration, known as the "Corpo" government, curtails women's and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. The government of these sectors is managed by "Corpo" authorities, usually prominent businessmen or Minute Men officers. Those accused of crimes against the government are tried in kangaroo courts presided over by "military judges". Despite these dictatorial measures, a majority of Americans approve of them, believing them to be necessary though painful steps to restore American power. Others, those less enthusiastic about the prospect of corporatism, reassure themselves that fascism cannot "happen here"; hence the novel's title

'Promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness' is pretty much the claim of almost every challenger. Even if they have to make it up. Romney will repeal all those tax hikes for the middle class under Obama (he's cut taxes) and he'll reverse the change to remove work requirements for welfare (there was no removal) and he'll bring back the great economic results of the Bush administration (which weren't so great). He'll balance the budget - just like Bush promised he'd not only balance it but pay off the debt.

'Portraying himself as a champion of traditional American values', did you see the Romney converntion video? With little else to say, it was about 'bring back the 1950's'.

The administration being a 'corporatist regime'? Pretty spot on to today when it's far worse.

Attacking the rights of women? Ultrasounds, opposition to the Lilly Ledbetter equal pay act, breaking new ground on 'no abortions even for rape and incest victims', a sentiment against things like title IX equality for sports spending, a general sentiment not to do too much on sex discrimination issues (smal government, anti-regulation), etc.

People charged with crimes against the government tried in 'special trials' under the military? Look at how any such crimes are labeled 'terrorism' and suspects are vulnerable to indefinite detention - including very harsh treatment and torture - check the Bradely Manning detention for an example. Check the CIA just cleared this week for charges of murder of prisoners there's strong evidence for. Check the situation for Julian Assange, on trumped up questions who has offered to go if promised the US won't seize him.

And note, as I said:

"Despite these dictatorial measures, a majority of Americans approve of them, believing them to be necessary though painful steps to restore American power. "

People, including Americans, are all too susceptible to authoratarianism (except the kind that's invented, like the imaginary 'dictatorship' of President Obama).

I prefer the porn version controversy:

"Hans shot first!" "No, in the updated pro-women version, SHE came first!"

Fixed.

Obama said Bush was unpatriotic for the debt going up $4 trillion in 8 years, while under Obama it's gone up $5 trillion in only 4 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kuTG19Cu_Q

Obama said give him two years to fix the economy then it was 4 years, now it's going to take 8 years. He had his for years, and completely failed.

Seriously, how can anyone be so ignorant and brainwashed enough to vote for him again?

Everybody pack up their dirty underwear and take it back to P&N. This is my thread and it is all about Archie.

No, you're just being the brainwashed right-winged I mentioned. Let's see how you do.

Obama said Bush was unpatriotic for the debt going up $4 trillion in 8 years, while under Obama it's gone up $5 trillion in only 4 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kuTG19Cu_Q

Bush inherited a balanced budget; Obama inherited the worst economic crash since the great depression neeeding massive government involvement to stabilize it.

That government intervention to stabilize in a crash is the standard response to every crash, by both parties - until this time when Republicans tried to deny most help to Obama.

So, the two of them inherited, and spent, in very different situations. That matters. Pretty much all of Obama's deficit spending is from Bush programs, as well.

So why doesn't Obama just get rid of the Bush programs? Ya, that'll pass the Republicans (including their phony 'veto' in the Senate). He wanted to repeal the biggest deficit-increasing policy, the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy - shock, the Republicans held the nation hostage to fight him on it.

So, you don't have much point.

Obama said give him two years to fix the economy then it was 4 years, now it's going to take 8 years. He had his for years, and completely failed.

Some truth to that; his estimates were overly optimistic, but they assumed his policies actually were passed; who knows if they'd have come true?

We sure don't, because Republicans blocked nearly all of his policies. So, ya, without his policies passed, the benefits of those policies don't happen.

Not much point again.

What we DO know is that the corporatist policies - some since Reagan, some passed under Clinton and Bush - and various things led to that huge crash under Bush.

And they led to the hugely corrupt response to the crash, where money was funneled to - surprised - the worst company Goldman Sachs, by their previous chairman.

Obama has done wrong there too - but his wrongs are more things like not prosecuting the crimes of the crash, not causing it.

Republicans - surprise - have also blocked any stronger new regulations to prevent another crash and limit Wall Street's taking 40% of all the profit in the economy.

And who is the guy who will stand up for the people to Wall Street? Mitt Romney and Kid Rand, good call!

Seriously, how can anyone be so ignorant and brainwashed enough to vote for him again?

Now, let's give you some facts to respond to - and answer your uninformed question.

Read the following list of Obama achievments, and then say why it has no reason to vote for him.

As for brainwashing, the only brainwashing here is people like you - who of course can't understand that and just throw the word back at Obama voters.

It's like the racists saying "I'm not a bigot, YOU'RE a bigot". Or like people who cheat on their spoused and then accuse their non-cheating spouse of cheating.

You don't understand how brainwashing works. Brainwashed people have a hard time understanding it.

But you show the normal response - you utterly fail to respond to the lies by Republicans - just as I predicted - and lacking anything useful to say post a weak attack.

It's an interesting issue - why they want to wipe out the cigarette and how they can do it well - but it has nothing to do with your topic, which is about more real 'brainwashing'.

Good idea or bad idea?

Well, for one thing, it displays the success of the education program against smoking (a government program by the way, to save lives, against the tobacco companies).

You don't want too much 'censorship', but on this cigarette - seems ok to me.

I understand it. You're a perfect example of it.

The debt is far worse under Obama, than Bush, and you make excuses. The Democrats had the Whitehouse, Senate, and the House of Representatives for two years, yet you're still blaming Republicans that Obama failed. A clear case of brainwashing.

The Patriot Act was extended by Obama. I don't hear nearly the outrage over it, as when Bush did it, because you're brainwashed. It was horrible when Bush did it, yet you're not protesting now that Obama does the same thing. Obama even gave the telecommunication companies immunity from the wiretapping. Talk about a corporate whore. Yet liberals are always calling Republicans that. You know why, they are brainwashed. How many RIAA lawyers did Obama appoint to the Department of Justice? Who's a corporate a whore?

Bush was called fiscally irresponsible for tax cuts, and now that Obama has extended those same tax cuts, where's the protest? If you weren't brainwashed you'd say the same thing about Obama that you did about Bush.

Bush was called a war monger, but under Obama we are militarily involved in more countries now than under Bush. Military spending is higher now than under Bush. Obama has killed far more people with Predators than Bush did. The violence in Afghanistan is worse, and he delayed the Bush plan on getting out of Iraq. So who's really the war monger? Come on you can say. It starts with an O.

What about Bush being called a war criminal for holding prisoners in Guantanamo Bay without a trial. Obama said one of the first things he was going to do was close Guantanamo Bay. It's still open. So not only is Obama a war criminal by left wing standards, he is also a liar. But I don't hear you calling Obama a war criminal. You had no trouble saying it about Bush. You know why? Because you're brainwashed.

They pounded the word Hope into your brain so hard that you're still falling for it.

Obama has been worse than Bush. I have no problem saying Bush wasn't a very good President because unlike you, I'm not brainwashed. If you're not brainwashed, come on and admit it, Obama is even worse than Bush. You can say it. Obama is even worse than Bush

The difference between Spielberg and Lucas is Spielberg is a filmmaker. Lucas is a businessman. He hasn't made a movie in years. The guy officially lost me when he said Red Tails got poor reviews because critics were racist. I guess he conveniently forgot about Jar Jar Binks.

The case of the Archie cover is PC run amok. Most people don't care but there's a vocal minority with lots of money that does. They're the same people who convinced Spielberg to digitally remove the guns in ET. Though with today's political climate, I bet if Archie had been smoking a fattie it would still be there.

Revisionist history is the worst kind of lie. Without knowing the real past, you can't know the real present.

Idiot. The anti-smoking crusade is a left wing thing. How did you end up blaming the right wing for it? Go kill yourself. __________________
