Just because they tell you on the phone they do or dont have it in stock doesn't nessasarily mean much. I've seen countless cases (and experianced it myself) where they say its in stock because they checked computer over phone, then they cant find it when you get there because the computer was wrong. I went to compusa a couple weeks ago to get one of those $5 AR wireless USB thingys. They didn't have any, and the guy next to me had driven like 40 mins away since they told him on the phone they had it when they didn't. Make them physically reserve you one or check stock physically if you are driving from a ways away. When you get to store, always ask them to check in back if there's nothing up front. Unless they are rude like BB, they should be willing to do it. Last time I went to BB, there was an employee who REFUSED to check in back for a $100 laptop power adapter for me that was on sale. I kept asking him to check and he kept saying, "but that 130watt one in paper is identical to this 100 watt one on the shelf, buy that one, the compatability list is exactly the same." I told him I wanted to check it for myself and he said well I'm not going to go out back.
I've also heard of cases (like there was a hot deal on a clearance card table at target) where the computers all said they didn't have any, and yet people found half a dozen of them when they went and actually visited the store. There's also some rare clearance cases where the computer shows they have none because it was zeroed out, but they forgot to remove the items from the shelf.
The computers that show stock levels are not infailible and in fact are often wrong. Unless they did thier yearly inventory last week, odds are its off. From things like shoplifting, to accounting or shipping errors, or even the stock guy accidently hitting the wrong number when punching in that they received them.
As well, dont call if the normal price is very very low with no rebates. As mentioned above, the out the door price will tip an employee off when looking at computer. If its AR, its fine (like this one since its $200 list) since the computer almost never shows the rebates. Since this is a $200 19" monitor out the door, it should be fine to ask them over the phone about it (as long as you dont tell them the AR price). And dont ask them if the price is such and so if its a mistake, dont tip off the employees to any good price mistakes. The rare consciensous employee will try to get someone to fix it, but most will just go and take all of them for themselves if its a super hot deal with no rebates.
