If noise/fanboyism isn't an issue, look at an x1900, they're frankly better at the mo'. Guessing SLI'ing the GT isn't an option? What CPU? If you're running a 1Ghz Pentium, that could be more worthwhile :p

If your going to make the jump due to FPS issues, go with the ATi for now, otherwise I think it would be a waste of monies at this time...IMHO

Every little bit helps but X1900XT is the way to go for now.

Unless it's a Step Up program upgrade to the GTX, and thus a cost issue, there's no reason not to go with the X1900XT

Yeah dude, even I have to say that ATI would be the better choice at the moment. Unless you're that sensetive to noise & [possible] driver issues, I highly doubt it'd be worth "saving" a little money on the GTX, as the 1900XT would easily outpreform it.

I don't see why you rule out the X1900XT but if it's out then it's out.

I wouldn't upgrade then, not to an XFX at least, eVGA maybe then you can step up to a 7900GTX later on.

I just got a Dell pentiumD 3.0Ghz. with 1gig of ram and the thing came with a 24" LCD. So what I am wondering is if this system is going to be a good match for a X1900XT?
Will I need to upgrade to ram to 2gigs?
Will the CPU keep up with the X1900XT?
Will the LCD be ok for gamming?

I think I know the answers but I would like to have your in put:)

I overclocked my 7800GT so it gets 8200 in 3dmark05, the 7800GTX gets 7800. So my 7800GT > 7800GTX.

Alot of people that overclock a x1900xtx and go @ 750/850 to even 800/900ish :! then if you have a AMD opteron 175 OC 2.8GHZ ish or AMD X2 @2.8Ghz , you can get 13000+ 3D MARK :)

According to Anandtech, going from GT to GTX at 16x12 with AA/AF:

BF2
GT.....37.2
GTX...42.9 13% increase

Doom3
GT.....48
GTX...54.9 13%

FEAR
GT.....20
GTX...24 17%

Splinter Cell CT
GT.....28.5
GTX...34.7 18%

Quake4
GT.....48.5
GTX...55.8 13%

Whether those 4-7 fps are worth the $100 to you is up to you.

No way is it worth it. I don't see why you have a problem with getting an ATi card. That extra $100 would probably get you an X1900 XT which is far better than the 7800 GTX.

No way is it worth it to upgrade from a 7800GT OC to a 7800GTX. Get an X1900XT! I can not stress that enough!

GET AN X1900XT!

Total cost out of pocket looks to be around $100. Is this a worthwhile upgrade? Usual games are things like Q4, UT2004, FEAR, NFS:MW, HL2, the current and recent 'good ones'.

I know I *won't* be looking at the 7900 for at least 6 months after release, so the only question is should I do the upgrde or no? I run a 20" LCD, 1600x1200 if that helps.

thanks for any advice!

I'd have to say no cause you are tecnically only getting 4 more pipes as most 7800gt can OC very well near GTX levels.

consider this deal http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102629R a x1800xt is lot better than GTX in some games and almost twice as fast as a 7800 GT in some games and the price is nice
