Has anybody seem this crap. Holy sexist.

I guess it doesn't have a huge impact as real men don't eat at vegan cafes anyway.

The feminist vegan owner of Handsome Her eatery in Melbourne, Australia, is making them pay an 18 per cent “man tax” as well as giving women priority over seating.

Owner Alex O’Brien told Broadsheet website: “I do want people to think about it, because we’ve had this (pay discrepancy) for decades and decades and we’re bringing it to the forefront of people’s minds.

“I like that it is making men stop and question their privilege a little bit.”

What bar did you pay an 18% tax just for being a man?

They should be sued for being sexist.

Not a good business model, but it's their business. If they want to make a Social Comment, I'm ok with it, just wouldn't ever go there. Mainly because I'm not a vegetarian, but also because I'll save 18% anywhere else.

It's not the smartest strategy for a restaurant, but sexist? I'm not so sure.

Think about it: we live in a society where women not only have a hard time getting jobs with equal pay to men (whether it's because of unfair employers or discouragement from entering certain fields), but where women are financially punished for their biology. They have pay out of pocket for tampons and pads that are absolutely necessary to live in modern society, and they're seldom allowed to take time off if menstrual cramps are particularly painful. And while this cafe is in Australia, in the US women aren't guaranteed to get paid maternity leave -- that's messed up.

There are definitely better ways to raise awareness of inequalities (the kind of guys who'd go to a feminist vegan cafe are probably on your side, Alex), but this isn't some horrific example, either.

Also, real men eat whatever they're comfortable with eating, whether they're vegan or a borderline carnivore.

I my opinion it is illegal in the US to charge more based only on sex. ( I know this is in Australia ) I know all the liberals will support this no matter how wrong it is. The lamest is because they have to pay for fucking tampons and pads. LOL!

Oh, and f*** businesses that offer senior discounts. This is simply another way to say they are imposing a surcharge on younger people.

Yeah if it was here they'd be a "suggested" man price. I have a feeling the man fee isn't enforced where she is it's more of a statement. However I still stand by what I've said on these forums, if you own a business keep politics out.

Hey, let's try charging you several hundred dollars a year just to be able to leave your home and see how you feel.

Good thing about fair capitalism people have alternatives. If a vegetable goes up in price there are usually alternatives.

When people are beholden to a single source product they are held hostage. Not much of a story absent feign outrage.

Whoa, trigger. Easy there.

Getting your panties in a wad over someone making a statement will never end well.

I think that is off set by being able to be a Mother or imagine working with someone who gets an additional 10-30 days off a year for cramps all while earning the same salary.
These are classic arguments there will always be one winner & one loser.

Think about it: we live in a society where women not only have a hard time getting jobs with equal pay to men...

Employees on the same job should (and do) earn the same hourly wage.

It's Time That We End the Equal Pay Myth
The wage gap statistic, however, doesn’t compare two similarly situated co-workers of different sexes, working in the same industry, performing the same work, for the same number of hours a day. It merely reflects the median earnings of all men and women classified as full-time workers.

And the counter point? This line of crap wanting more healthcare, and more flex than other workers. Far from equal treatment.

No, The Gender Pay Gap Isn’t A Myth — And Here’s Why
Sure, many women choose to stay home or cut back their hours after having children. But many others don’t opt out. They’re forced out because they cannot afford child care, or find a full-time job that affords them any kind of flexibility.

And here's the cold hard truth of the matter which, ironically, Huffpo's demands just affirmed.

The ‘Equal Pay Day’ factoid that women make 78 cents for every dollar earned by men
In 2011, economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis surveyed economic literature and concluded that “research suggests that the actual gender wage gap (when female workers are compared with male workers who have similar characteristics) is much lower than the raw wage gap.” They noted that women may prefer to accept jobs with lower wages but greater benefits (more flexible parental leave) so excluding such fringe benefits from the calculations will exaggerate the wage disparity. One survey, prepared for the Labor Department by the CONSAD Research Corp. during the George W. Bush administration, concluded that when such differences are accounted for, much of the hourly wage gap dwindled, to about 5 cents on the dollar.

There is no truth to the lies of "pay gap" for the working class. It's a simpleton's way of looking at a raw statistical difference between two groups. Much like race realist stats, not accounting for all the other factors and histories involved. A raw number doesn't tell a full story, but it sells propaganda.

I knew someone would trot that out. It's not what I'm getting at.

I said that women have a hard time getting jobs equal to men, not that they aren't being paid as well as men when they do (although even this is occasionally untrue -- there are some actresses who'd beg to differ, for example). Think about boy's clubs where men tend to hire other men; think about ostracization and harassment that push women out of roles prematurely; think about girls being discouraged from entering STEM programs because they're supposedly not as good at math and science as the boys. And of course, think about having to settle for a lower-paying job to support a new child.

Also, you do realize that you're treating male biology as a default, right? You gripe about women wanting more healthcare and more flexibility than "other workers," but who are these other workers? Oh, right. Men to you are the norm, and all women are outliers. I'm sorry, but if you really believe women are equal, you accommodate their biological functions -- you don't act as if pregnancy and menstruation are strange occurrences, or that it's somehow fine for women to assume they'll take a pay cut the moment they start a family.

Nice. You have a liberal spirit. I would be willing to pay more to eat there because I can. I have at least 18% more money than most women. My mMother was also a woman. Thanks Mom, for me. I owe you everything, not just 18%. Of course if I were suffering from massive self hate, this 18% thingi would bug the shit out of me. Poor poor me, I suffer so from white male abuse.

Literally who gives a shit? With all that's going on in this country, how could you possibly get riled up about what is going on in some single cafe in Australia? Of course it's stupid and I don't agree with it, but it's a private business and I honestly don't care what they do. I don't know what Australia's discrimination laws are, but I imagine they'll handle it if it's a legal matter there. You've gotta really be desperate for progressive outrage if you're reaching for these types of stories.
