I know ATOT loves to pile on the self righteousness, but "owned" was the first thing I thought of when I read the thread title. Before I read the actual news, I had no idea whether this was some girl in the middle of america talking about having to endure a couple nights with a bunch of horny and smelly guys who were mean to her, or if it was someone being brutally assaulted.

Either way, "owned" was a gut reaction sharpened by too much intarwebs, and whether it was someone I knew or didn't, getting into an accident or otherwise, "owned" would probably still be the same reaction. Whether I was happy or not about that particular ownage is a different story, but hey.. go ahead and be righteous =P.

Maybe, you should read before you post.

Well, I read after my post and didn't see a need to change my post. I'm glad ATOT'ers found my post something they could lambast repeatedly.

Wow. Thats horrible. What were those officers thinking?

Brazil has come a long way from its once military controlled government in the 80's. Unfortunately 60% of the country is still in despair living in the absolute worst poverty you can think of, these people have no choice but to rob and steal and beg unfortunately. They have no government programs or handouts. Its truly survival of the fittest. That said these officers were definitely corrupt and they should be held accountable for their actions.

People get raped in prisons all the time, including underage suspects in adult jails. It sucks, but it's no news, and the gender of the victim should not be the deciding factor.
The only reason for this outrage is that she is a woman. If it was a man getting gang raped in prison, there would be no thread about it, and if there was, many people would say "serves him right."

Poor girl wasn't even charged with anything. The things you take for granted in this country.

In which US prisons are juveniles housed in the same immediate area as adults? In my state, they can't even be detained within sight/sound of adult detainees.

Well, this isn't in the US either, it's in Brasil. You are going to tell me no 15 year old boys are jailed with adults and victimized in Brazil, and if there are, why do you think that hasn't made news around the world?

By the tone of your post, I thought you were referring to this as a commonplace/everywhere occurrence.

So, you're saying that if it was a 15yo boy, there would be no outrage? I disagree.

It would not have been an outrage because you simply would not have heard about it. I think in reality, both are an outrage, what I don't like is that it only gets coverage if it's a female getting raped, and male on male prison rape is almost cheered upon by society.

Shit happens.

you're an idiot.

How do you figure? She fucked up, and she paid the price. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's any kind of deserved punishment, but I'm sure she'll think twice before breaking the law a second time. A little slap of harsh reality.

That must be how they do things in....Canada?

A country world renowned for it's harsh punishme....

::cough::

Because aside from the gender of the victim, this is nothing new. There are a lot of outrages happening in the third world that aren't news worthy, they are just statistics. How many kids die because of preventable diseases that could be cured for pennies?

So you're saying if they won't report everything, it might as well just be ignored completely..?

And if this is nothing new aside from the gender of the victim, then it is news. :p

If you find a story about a 15yo boy being held for a month with no charges, being raped daily by up to 20 people, I'll be willing to provide my opinion on that as well. Rest assured that it will be the same as it is here.

the difference is in this case its like putting a fox in charge of the hen house, or a pedophile in charge of day care. the power differential is just excessive and the victims have zero chance.
as flawed as many western prison systems are, we do separate women and men and adults from children to minimize such abuse. to say the imperfect justifies total barbarity is just stupid.

Yeah, it's pretty insane. There should be a law against throwing a minor, especially a female, in a jail cell with men. I could only imagine what sort of torture she went through...hell...she's only 15. Who cares if she even stole a car...committing a nonviolent crime only to become a victim of a violent crime. :(

I don't think Brazil regularly does this...it was obvious a powerplay by the officers that arrested her.

They should be sentenced to death.

No one 'deserves' to be raped in jail. They have already been sentenced. A high percentage have done nothing to hurt anyone and get raped.

This is a totally different matter though as one the victim was a child and placed in a group cell of the opposite sex.

You can't say that because rape happens in prison it's ok...that is just ignorant. Someone with HIV in prison has the ability to deal a death sentence to someone that got thrown in jail for a year because they couldn't afford to pay for some fine/fee.

Wow. Well South America isn't know for it's stout governments with extensive oversight.

This girl probably got raped hourly. She's going to be very damaged.
