Try Debian then! Got it installed in 15 minutes, 20 minutes later I was up and running with X and everything else I needed.
apt-get is much better then emerge IMO.
does apt-get check for necessary dependencies, download them, install them, THEN download and install what you want to install via portage?

The only thing apt has over emerge is binary packages. The BSDs that use ports (open and free, netbsd has pkgsrc, and I'm not sure how it works

It takes care of dependencies just fine. It also provides easy update. But it treats all 3rd party applications as part of the base system, and that's my major complaint about it.
