That's what I'm thinking about trying instead.

It took me 45 minutes to install on my sparcstation 10, other than that, it installs pretty quickly.

There a Live-BSD distro, like Knoppix?

- M4H

FreeBSIE. It's based on FreeBSD.

Awesome. Think I'll roast a disc tonight and scare the sysadmin tomorrow. :D

- M4H

I installed FreeBSD on one or two of the desktops when I was working in a callcenter.

I don't think anyone found out. :p

Well, the reason I wanted Gentoo is the whole emerge function. Is there something similar to that with OpenBSD?

Try Debian then! Got it installed in 15 minutes, 20 minutes later I was up and running with X and everything else I needed.

apt-get is much better then emerge IMO.

does apt-get check for necessary dependencies, download them, install them, THEN download and install what you want to install via portage?

The only thing apt has over emerge is binary packages. The BSDs that use ports (open and free, netbsd has pkgsrc, and I'm not sure how it works :p) also have binary packages available. I typically use them instead of building ports because it's as fast as the closest FTP server.

It takes care of dependencies just fine. It also provides easy update. But it treats all 3rd party applications as part of the base system, and that's my major complaint about it.

Bah, hardly a complaint in my book! It works, it's fast, AND it's easy. :D

I like having a well defined base system, especially when it's been auditted over and over again. ;)
