At this weekend’s senior national championships in Salt Lake City, Cummings will attempt to break the American men’s record in the clean and jerk for the 62-kilogram (about 137-pound) weight class. The current mark of 152.5 kilograms (roughly 336 pounds) was set in 2002 by LeGrand Sakamaki, then 25, and is one of USA Weightlifting’s longest-standing records.

UPDATE:

He did it!

I wouldn't exactly call a record set in 2002 "long standing". Plus, that is just the US record. The Olympic world record is just as old and stands at 182kg.

Still, impressive though. He might have a chance to medal if he continues at that pace. Although, who knows what his weight class will be at 16.

About a year after his first Team Beaufort practice, an 11-year-old Cummings successfully performed a clean and jerk of 90 kilograms (roughly 198 pounds), twice his body weight.

Twice his body weight? Pfffft, please. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight. Now who are you trying to impress? :colbert:

From what little I've seen of him, he's pretty damn talented. Young and from a country that doesn't put their kids through the meat grinder just to pump out medalists. I hope he goes on to big things at the Olympics...a USA medal in weightlifting would be great to have again.

14 years old is a little young to be using steroids, isn't it?

You can use them at any age!

But yes, if he's using, he'll have sealed the growth plates at the ends of his bones. Hell, it's possible with enough muscle mass that his natural testosterone will have done that, too.

Has it been proven that steroids close growth plates? I know people have said that lifting can stunt growth but I'm pretty sure that's also false - at least according to The National Institute of Health.

Relevant bits from the article:

The latter group echoes decades-old concerns that children and adolescents who lift weights risk damaging their growth plates, resulting in short stature and a lack of testosterone. But a 2009 study done by the National Strength and Conditioning Association found “there is no evidence to suggest that resistance training will negatively impact growth and maturation.”

Not all anabolic steroids do this.

The kid is impressive. I really don't have a problem with people using steroids.

Today wunderdrug is prescribed TRT to put a man's level of testosterone at the level around 18ish. It even thwarts heart disease and many other problems older men face.

Women have been able to take hormones for menopause without any fanfare.

That said, the kid isn't just relying on 'roids. He has probably has epic DNA.

Finally saw the videos. They were blocked at work. This kid is a freak.

I hope he starts bulking and gets over 6' tall. I keep thinking, this could be the next Bo Jackson of football. Seems like the kid has coordination issues ... in that he must be able to tweak his form quicker than most. Bo Jackson's college baseball coach said that he could teach Bo things and in 2 days Bo would have it mastered. The coach also said that he was teaching Bo technique tricks that most pros took weeks or years to learn.

My son is finally getting interested in weights. I mean more than him liking the idea of lifting. He actually wants to do it. Age 9 1/2. I'm learning to. First thing is that the TV goes off when he is with me. I just want to see him do things like curls and situps. Then I want to teach him to do those with good form. Then we'll move onto things like squats (empty bar!)

That or maybe he won't be screwing up his spine at an early age and become a normal non attention seeking twit and become a real person.

But hey it's his life knock yourself kid, when your spine is busted early and you go on disability early in life and bitch about it go for it.

He can become a liberal and bitch about the government not covering his health care when his balls shrink up from the steroids I guess.

Just speculating atm I guess.

You don't seem to have a problem with a lot of stupid shit, but that has become obvious.

No personal attacks please.

Well, he did it:

http://savannahnow.com/sports/2014-...ts-national-weightlifting-record#.U8zkcJqKDv4

In his third attempt Saturday at the U.S. National Weightlifting Championships in Salt Lake City, Cummings broke the American men’s clean-and-jerk record for the 62-kilogram (about 137-pounds) division of 152.5 kilograms (about 336 pounds) set in 2002 by LeGrand Sakamaki, then 25. Cummings lifted 153 kilos (337.3 pounds) to his shoulders and then overhead, after he weighed in at 136 pounds.

Monster lift. He could be the next Bo Jackson if he hits a growth spurt.

I hope the kid is doing well in school because while strong he might not be the next Bo Jackson. I think I read an article about him where his trainer said that the kid is very level headed about his abilities.

Everyone is claiming he could be the next Bo Jackson. Why? Is he incredibly fast as well as superhumanly strong? Has he jumped over a car or broken a bat on his head?

Bo Jackson is a figure we only get once in a lifetime. Herculean in all ways, like a comic character, he burst out and then just as quickly was gone. There won't be another. I wish he could have kept playing football. =( Bo Jackson was the greatest running back of all time.

CJ will be fast and be able to jump.

I hope he sticks with weightlifting and doesn't move to another sport. It'll be a HUGE benefit for USAW.

And Bo didn't even lift, talk about gifted.

As for CJ, while some worry all the lifting on his still developing body could affect his development, my concern is his diet. I hope he's not on any sort of calorie restrictive diet so he can stay in a given weight class. Besides the normal growth a teen goes through, he's putting high demands on his body, I'd make sure he has all the excess calories his body needs to grow bigger and stronger.

The problem is Bo Jackson is the fastest 40 yard dash ever recorded at the NFL combine. He wasn't just fast, he was the fasted. He also wasn't just strong, he was the strongest. Bo Jackson is a mythical creature. And, he did all of that without lifting weights. Hell, he walked on and replaced Marcus Allen (a Hall of Fame RB) without even going through training camp; he played football after the MLB season was finished and missed all the early practices an games, and still excelled beyond belief. This kid isn't the next Bo Jackson; if only because nobody could ever match that.

And Bo didn't even lift, talk about gifted.

Yeah, it was only after his injury and surgery that he started to actually work out, and it was just to spite the Royals for cutting him.
