If you're going to upgrade, I would make the jump to at least a 9800 Pro.

I don't understand why some people think these games are so demanding sometimes. I have an Athlon 2200, 1024 PC2700 Kingston Value RAM and a slightly overclocked 9600 Pro...pretty modest rig. I run Far Cry (both single/multiplayer) at 1024x768 with all settings on a combination of "high" and "highest"...no AA. I have yet to experience as much as a hiccup on either mode of playing. The graphics look great and my framerates are pretty decent.

Just bugs me when I go to places like the Doom3 forums and hear all these people ask if their rig will run the game and people tell them that they have no chance. You may not be able to play with AA/AF at the max or ever single setting turned up to the highest level, but people shouldn't feel like they need to go drop $400+ on a new video card to run these games smoothly. And from what I've seen, the difference in how the graphics actually look from mid range cards to the high range cards are certainly noticable but not significant IMHO. Not to the point anyway that I can justify dropping $400 or so compared to the $112 I paid for my 9600Pro that I have zero complaints about up to this point.

Unless you got a X800 (or a OCed 6800 U) and a v. good CPU with decent amount of RAM, you will not be able to run Doom 3 very smoothly with all the eye candy on at 1027x768. Anyone who wants to dispute this will be proven wrong when they try it.

Exactly. I don't understand that either :p

Heh, it IS confirmed:

Davegod's post was on 6-24, about the time warcrow's "inside source" was telling him it would go gold. Oh well, mr secret source was only off by 3 weeks.

I'm still going to wait until it's actually out and reviewed before buying it -- that PC Gamer review of a beta build doesn't count, especially since they probably slanted it to get their "exclusive."

Yep, I'm cynical about the game industry :)

WOW. All this excitement over a video game. So what happens. Everyone goes and buys a new video card, plays the game for three months straight and then its over. No wonder America is the fattest and laziest country in the world.

<06/11/2004: retailer says release date "confirmed"
06/24/2004: me says how is it confirmed with there being no id announcement
*three weeks later*
07/14/2004: id announce D3 gold, with release date
07/14/2004: me days now it's confirmed.

edit: thx DaveSimmons :) though I'm going to buy it regardless, mag reviews are bollox aswell. Never participated in a beta, then played the retail game intensively and wondered WTF was this other game the reviewer must have been playing?

Oh I know! Lets not care about Doom3 and watch a bunch of foreign guys run up and down a feild casing a little black and white ball for a hour or so.

Then when the game is over, we freak out and riot and kill some people and then get arrested. All over some phony misdirected sense of crappy nationalism.

Wow. Now that sounds like fun!

PS. We may be fat and lazy, but we are also rich and happy. Compare that to the suicide rates in.. say.. France for example.

I'd rather be fat and happy then skinny and suicidal.

well he does have a point tho. The US is SERIOUSLY the most degenerate consumer oriented non productive society. With that said, I'm *STILL* going to go get a X800 pro and poop my pants repeatedly when I get this game.

Bullshit. I don't know were people get the idea that Americans are lazy. Personally I work hard. Everybody I know (with one exception) has a great deal of pride in their jobs and care about what they do for a living.

Americans work the longest hours, have fewer vacations, and are on a average much more productive PER working hour then most every other industrialized nation out there. There is a reason why we still have a high standard of living, and it's not because we are big militaristic overlords. Look at the rates of unemployment and amount of people on welfare in many other industrial counties.

Thats the reason we take our leasure time very seriously. It's precious and we are willing to baby ourselves a bit. Don't fall for this guilt bullshit and take pride in yourself and what you do.

Now there are definatly a lot of lazy bastards out their, and the situation has degraded a bit, especially when you take weight into account...

But guess what? Other countries aren't far behind.

Did you know that while there are starving people in Africa, their still is a big issue with childhood obesity in lots countries there? Or how about Cananda, were rates of obisity are 30%? In the UK and Australia they are still dealing with rates past 20%.

Oh and gass. People whining that a gallon of gas in Europe is 6 bucks. Oh, but guess what? Oil costs the same for them as us, 5 dollars out of 6 dollars in gas is TAXES. Whoopie.

Most degenerate consumer oriented culture my butt.

Now we definatly have some major issues to deal with, Drugs and such cause huge problems. Take the rates of criminal homicide for instance. People blame guns, but it's a fact that areas with highest rates of gun ownership have the lowest murder rates. However their is a direct cooralation between areas of high drug use and high murder rates. 1 for 1 pretty much. And in areas in other countries with similar drug use, you have similar problems. Take the slum areas of London for instance were you have drug gangs and such.

So before getting all judgemental about Americans, you have to realise that nobody else is any better, or have the moral high ground in anything. Everyplace has f-ups, its just different in different places.

Yes, teh Video forums will be off the hook this summer with people asking which video card will perform better and why.

Not to mention all of us hardware buffs will be showing off our benchmarks on games other than Far Cry.

Im excitied!

Earlier this morning, Hollenshead personally confirmed the e-mail's legitimacy to GameSpot. "It's authentic," he said. Shortly after 11:00am PDT, the news was officially confirmed by a press release from Activision's external PR agency, which aptly cried, "See you in Hell!"

I just get excited about stuff, and this is the wrong forum for it. Sorry.

Played the last one for several years.

Since you can level edit right inside the game engine the Mods should be worth the price of admission alone.

There's a big point we missed. The US *USED* to take pride in being the BIGGEST producer per capita. I'm talking about real physical goods. Things like Steel, great automobiles, iron, airplanes, space technology, high tech goods, and so on. We are now the biggest *CONSUMER* per capita. If this nation is to stay great, it has to start producing goods instead of forcing cheap labor down the throat of our Mexican neighbors. this is off topic, start a thread on it if u want

to keep this on thread:

DOOM 3 YEAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Me:

Athlon XP 3000
X800 Pro
2x73GB 10k rpm raptors raid 0
1GB pc3200 cas2
22" Monitor
Audigy2
5.1 Klipsch PM (original 400Watt version) w/ rear speaker stands
$1200 Italian leather lounge chair
3 days off work.
Minifridge and herb in arms length
Preordered Doom3 just 5 minutes down the road.

There's room for improvement in there somewhere but the experience should be quite satisfying.
