The PA store got 12 total 4090's, 8 on launch day and 4 via FedEx another day. None after that since October 12th.

I don't care which one I end up with as long as it's not gigabyte or pny. I had a bad experience with a Gigabyte oc 1080ti. The rog strix is nice but not worth the extra $400 in my opinion. Although my last 1080ti was a rog strix oc and it was a beast of a card that lasted me a long time.

Even 4090 FE's pull over 450W if ray tracing is enabled. If you don't use RT, then they are typically 370-400W.

Though if you undervolt it, the power draw should go down quite a bit.

When I run Port Royal it stays at 430w. I think Gigabyte locked the default BIOS down to 450w. I'll try some more stuff. I don't play Cyberpunk, so I'm not worried about that one. I think I'll run a quick Metro Exodus Enhanced benchmark to see how that does.

edit: topped out at 420w with Metro as well. Ray tracing enabled, extreme settings.

Why the heck would a 1000w psu not support 600w? Even intels power hogs don't use 400w?

Its not about whether or not the PSU can support 600W continuous draw - It's an ATX 3.0 PSU, which means they have to have it capable of supporting transient spikes 3x the amount that they rate the 16 pin PCI-e connector for. AKA, at 600W that 1000W PSU would have to support 1800W transient spikes from the GPU alone while also powering the rest of the system.

In order to meet ATX 3.0 spec and claim you are ATX 3.0 Certified you have to properly rate your cables. The power delivery capability and OPP/OCP on the 1200W probably is capable of the 1800W spikes while the 1000W is only capable of the 1350W spikes the 450W is required to accommodate.

The other part of ATX 3.0 is the PSU has to accommodate 2x total power rating in transient spikes, so 2000W for the 1000W model. If that's their target, there is no room for 1800W GPU spikes while powering a normal system, it leaves too little power available. The 1200W model would have to accommodate 2400W spikes, leaving plenty of extra space over 1800W for the rest of the system power.

I have a slight preference for the FE or either of the MSI Suprim cards, but am fine with any of them. The noise/temperatures are all pretty similar and the only difference is the look.

PNY makes straight reference cards but have been solid and reliable for me. I've had a couple of their cards. I haven't dealt with their support but they are probably above average, since their main business is Quadro cards.

Do any of you recall an rumor article 2-3 weeks ago about nvidia cutting production of the 4090 to make more hpc equipment to export to china before the 2023 ban comes into place? Does anyone think nvidia cut production because they recognized this problem and pulled out of the hole to fix it before it became an ever bigger load on their hands? It's a mess even with the less than a dozen reports of cables melting or a minor fire. I've been calling up every place almost daily to see if they'll get a 4090 in but no one knows anything about them.

It's China, selling a single H100 80GB for $36k makes much more sense than selling 10 4090's for $1,600-2,000 each.

There's nothing wrong with my <1 year old 1200W ROG Thor so I won't be replacing it, but if/when I end up with a GPU that uses the 12pin connector I'll probably just buy the end from modDIY and then make my own 12VHPW to 3x 8 pin on the power supply. It'll be safer and won't have the ugly octopus beside the card.

Which 4090 do you have? I think the Asus ROG strix, MSI supreme, or Asus tuf OC models may pull more.

Personally I'd be happy if I can get the MSI liquid or any model except gigabyte or pny. I'm waiting for people at microcenter to update me if they received stock this morning.

That is good to know. Out of nowhere today I saw microcenter had a gigabyte oc 4090 so that's what I ended up buying. Hopefully it doesn't turn out bad like the gigabyte 1080ti I had years ago..but that's what the replacement warranty is for..barring it won't catch fire. It shouldn't since I got a PSU that has a native 16 pin connector rated at 600w.

TLDW - No melting even with cut/disconnected cables, high of 74c, solder is different to Igor & cables rated for 300V@105c compared to Igor which was 150V@105c. 3x GPU's, 5x Adapters, 0x Failures. He wants pictures of your adapters and may buy the cable/card from you for retail, email & detailed instructions in the video @ 11:54-14:18.

So apparently the Corsair cable I got is not the right one, and the 12-pin on it is only good for the 3000 cards. There is a new cable with the 16-pin connector, but it seems out of stock everywhere. If it's helpful for anyone else, the 12-pin cable is sleeved while the 16-pin has ribbon wires, it's the easiest way to tell them apart.

It's just as well that I cannot actually find a 4090 anywhere. To be honest I don't need it that urgently and will wait until they become more widely available. The Microcenter drops around here seem sporadic.

My 3080 is a Gigabyte card, and I'll admit that my experience with it did not push me toward a Gigabyte model initially. The biggest thing is that my 3080 Aorus Master has a huge heatsink, so I expected decent temperatures and/or low noise levels. The temperatures were high (70+) and the noise was too much (to me). I was disappointed that a higher-end variant had such poor performance. Although, the 4090s are all fine in regard to temperatures and noise, but the big thing is that EK already had blocks announced and available for pre-order for the Gigabyte cards. (They have them up for MSI now too.)

Honestly, in the end, I wasn't too worried about which brand. I preferred the FE simply because it had good performance at the lowest cost. Only a few other models were priced at that amount, and some of those were not guaranteed blocks. (Gigabyte's cheapest model was not verified in EK's configurator last I checked.)

If you can poke around at Best Buy on the weekdays, you are probably better off just watching their site. That's how I got my Founder's Edition card. I do sometimes have a YouTube stock tracker open, but in general, I just save the items to my Saved List and refresh it. I actually thought I missed out when I got mine because they had started going on sale 20 minutes before I even noticed, but Best Buy tends to release cards in waves.

I got my CableMod cables in yesterday, but I haven't had a chance to hook anything up yet. It's a bit more effort since I need to remove my current water-cooled card to put the 4090 in. (I'd like to get EK's new block, but I'm waiting for Performance PCs to get them in rather than ordering from EK.)

Any cable can burn, I've have 8pins melt before both on the PSU end and on the GPU end. I wouldn't worry too much about a one-off native cable going unless there's a lot more examples.

Sure but after the adapters doing this we thought it was just the Nvidia adapters. Now that ATX 3 psu's are becoming more available, I wonder if we will see more reports in the upcoming weeks.

This shouldn't be happening at all on a product of this price. I paid 2k with a warranty for a chance that it might occur.

But I'm not going to take a chance so the 4090 is staying unopened when I put together my 13900k and new board/ram this weekend. I'll wait to see what Nvidia says I suppose.

That article is confusing. The 3090/3090Ti never used the 16 pin 12VHPWR connector. They used an nVidia 12 pin connector.

And why are brand new 3090Ti cards coming out??

I'm using that MSI PSU with my gigabyte oc 4090. Been running it since last night. Checked the connector of the native cable and it seems fine. I made sure to make it click in by pressing it really hard into the card and then on the PSU side.

If anything does happen I did get the microcenter warranty on the card as well as the board and PSU. Several others in the microcenter discord also have the same PSU and they have been running it for weeks without issue.
