I don't see how Nvidia couldn't have encountered this issue in their own labs, because I highly doubt they tested the GPUs in perfect conditions either. Nvidia engineers are still normal people who just plugged in the 12-pin cable without much thought regarding minimum bend radiuses, etc, and they probably tested a reference card inside an actual case, not an open air rig, to determine if the reference cooler was satisfactory. Any kind of long term testing would have hopefully exposed the power connector issue.

I'm not entirely sure what is the truth but apparently it was Intel how designed and pushed for this connector and all the warning from PCIE/SIG that slide according to at least one youtuber come from Nvidia. So from the looks of it they were aware but still decided to use it and that with a cheap adapter on top. Sounds like a stupid management decision, potential from the top because the cards must look like a nice leather jacket?

Looks like the 16pin GPU cable is only rated for 450w.
Should be fine, I'm not planning on overclocking the card. It won't pull more than 450w and the melting issues are specific to the Nvidia dongle adapters.

But if I see a higher model available tomorrow at microcenter I can return it to Newegg unopened.

Not sure which model you have, but a 4090 FE can pull near 500W in gaming. And typically you want to follow the 80% rule. If that output is rated at 450W, you don't want to pull more than 80% (360W) from it.

Ignore my 80% comment above. It was me misreading where the limitation was.

I don't have any of the 4090s yet. But that is a good point. I suppose then the 1200w model of the same PSU has a better built 12vhpwr cable?
I guess I'm trying to understand why all 12vhpwr cables don't support 600w by default.

Are you talking about the 80% rule in electrical? That has to do with the circuit breaker not the wires. (You can actually buy 100% continuous breakers too!)

I am having trouble finding the rating for the 1000W PSU. I see people mentioning the cable that is rated for 450W on the 1000W. But nothing on the higher output supplies other than Thermaltake saying "up to 600W" in their press release for the whole series of supplies, which go up to 1650W.

I was thinking more along the lines of the PSU's output rating, but that was me misreading the limitation of that port. Its really fuzzy if the supply itself will also limit the output of that port (which is a feature of ATX 3 PSUs), or if it was just a limitation of the included cable. And at least on the 1000W, the 12vhpwr cable has a label on it saying 450W.

I think the 1200w and up models have a 12vhpwr cable that supports 600w which is just weird if 1000w is enough for a 4090 when Nvidia recommends at least 850w.

At the 14:20 mark the wattage is written on the cable.

It's all good. Just keep voltage stock and don't worry about it.

I'm going to return it to Newegg once it arrives and try to get the 1200w model. The EVGA G6 I have now is great but I don't want to wait for cablemod's adapter either. Seems like a 90 degree adapter with the Nvidia dongle makes two points of failure possible.

I bought one. I'm not concerned with the 450w limit on that cable. I'm running my 4090 stock and it doesn't pull 450w. No plans to overclock either.

Which 4090 do you have? I think the Asus ROG strix, MSI supreme, or Asus tuf OC models may pull more.

Personally I'd be happy if I can get the MSI liquid or any model except gigabyte or pny. I'm waiting for people at microcenter to update me if they received stock this morning.

I have the Gigabyte Gaming OC.

I tried this but they told me they cannot say in advance whether something will be in stock or not. Even if it shows in stock on their website, it may be gone by the time I get there 45 minutes later. I did this with the 3090 and just managed to grab their last one that day.

Ok I ended up getting the MSI A1000G ATX 3.0 PSU from microcenter this morning. They had a lot of them in stock. The 12vhpwr cable in this one is specifically written on the cable as 600w. I also got the protection plan for it for 2 years for $20 since I never used msi psu's before.

I follow a microcenter discord server that has the PA store chat in there and some people there know the managers or drive by fairly often, check on stock and report in the chat. I'm not sure what state you are in but if you want I can send you the discord link via message.

Even 4090 FE's pull over 450W if ray tracing is enabled. If you don't use RT, then they are typically 370-400W.

Though if you undervolt it, the power draw should go down quite a bit.

I go to the NJ and Brooklyn stores, both are about a 45 minute drive. That discord link would be helpful.
