128GB SSD: Crucial or Samsung

Hey guys, I currently have a 64GB Crucial M4 that is full so I'm looking for a replacement, these are my options:
Crucial M4 128GB $100 Used
Samsung 840 120GB: $110+tax
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB: $159+tax

My computer is a 2009 Mac Pro, with SATA 2 only, I would love the 840Pro, but can't afford the price, the cheapest option is the local used Crucial M4, or I can get the regular Samsung 840 if it's a big difference from the Crucial M4. On paper it seems like the Samsung 840 is a bit better than the Crucial, however in real world I'm wondering if there is a big difference that would make it worth the $24 more.

Can't go wrong with any of them really, especially limited to SATA II.

I've had my 128GB Crucial M4 for almost a year now and it has been great. Not a single issue with it and I would buy one again if I needed one.

You are right, the 840P is way overpriced.... I'd pick the 840 everyday and twice on Sunday.

the regular sammy has TLC memory. i wouldn't use that as a primary boot drive ever, but that's just me. the pro is a great drive, but don't know if it's worth the premium over other drives.

I'm thinking the M4, The 840 with TLC scares me, and I wont dump the extra money for the 840 Pro since I'm limited to SATA II.

after some research, it seems the OCZ Vertex 4 128GB uses the newer Marvel Controller. They sell for $130+tax, I'm thinking of getting one, although I can't take advantage of the speed currently, if I do get a new computer with SATA 3, it would be nice to have a fast drive. Has anyone had any issues with the Vertex 4?

I got my Kingston sddnow v300 120gb for $68.04 total. Its not the fastest, but since I am on SATA 2 also as of now its works fine. Looking into upgrading soon to SATA 3 and taking advantage of the speed it has left. Might be another drive to look into, they are still $89.99 at Staples which is where I got mine but also had a 30% off coupon.

it does, but if you're limited to sata2, i would get with the tried & true intel 320 series, or x-25m (larger, longer lasting NAND) if you can find one still brand new for a good price.

the vertex 4 is a solid drive though. ocz has a bad stigma because of their sandforce drives. i don't have a single sandforce series drive (sata2 or sata3) that hasn't failed at LEAST once (some 4-5 times). the vertex 4 in my work computer has been chugging along 24/7 since about a month after they came out with no issues at all.

I'm thinking Vertex 4 now too, as it's more future proof for when I get a SATA 3 computer. It'll cost me $30 more than the used M4, but it does use a newer controller, and write performance is almost triple. (175mb/s vs 430mb/s). I just hope it's reliable, since the Crucal M4 brand new sells for $120, and the Vertex 4 is only $10 more.

For regular consumer-level usage, I don't think it's a problem.

Based on the choices the OP has, I would take a new 840 over a used M4 any day. I would normally recommend the 840Pro, but the price they are asking is too much.

Following that logic, I would get the 840Pro....

...and I'm not trying to be an OCZ hater... you will note I have an Evil SandForce OCZ in my HTPC and never had a problem with it in 18 months of use... but, I would not buy an OCZ drive now because it's quite possible the company will go belly up. No OCZ = no drive support.

good points, I'm gonna sleep on it and hopefully in the next few days figure out what to get.

Why not get another 64 M4 and RAID them. This is how I got started with SSD's. It was too expensive to buy into a 256 a few years back. So I started with one Intel 320 160G. Then added another and now up to three.

Is it possible to fit two hard drives into a laptop?

I have 840 128 in the mail for games if I needed a system ssd I would have gone with 840-256 it seems faster.
Sequential Read/Write Speeds 128gb = 530 MB/s / 130 MB/s.
Sequential Read/Write Speeds 256gb = 540 MB/s / 250 MB/s.
Started with M4-64GB on to M4-128 and last pc has 830s
If my wifes used her laptop more then 2 hrs a week I believe I would give up the cd space for a ssd if possible.

CD Drive Bay Caddy for second SSD if no other place. Can be had on e-bay for under $10.

I don't have a laptop, I have a Mac Pro desktop, so raid is an option, but I rather just get a new ssd and sell my old 64GB, or use it in another computer around the house.

The 840 should serve you well. Due to good prices you could get a 250GB. In addition, the 250GB is faster than the smaller one.
