128 Students Suspended at Ind. School

HAMMOND, Ind. - Classrooms were a little less crowded at Morton High School on the first day of classes: 128 students were sent home for wearing the wrong clothes.

Fed up with inappropriate outfits, the principal suspended the students for one day Wednesday, minutes after doors opened at the school. Those suspended represent more than 10 percent of the 1,200 total students.

The offending attire _ including baggy pants, low-cut shirts, tank tops and graphic T-shirts _ are banned from classrooms. Students were also cited for cell phone use.

"This was the worst year I've seen in a long time," said Principal Theresa Mayerik. "It's gotten out of control, and we needed to send a message that we're not messing around."

The Hammond school usually has 20 dress code violations a day.

Mayerik said the infraction would be removed from students' records in 12 weeks if they had no other in-school violations.

School board members said they support Mayerik and the mass suspensions. "I'd be supportive if half the school was sent home, because 99 percent will get the message our schools are for education," board president Rebecca Ward said.

dress codes are b-s

Eddie Byrd,

Considering how many times we have banned you under other names, YOU are more BS than any dress code.

The inner-city black school district in the area (if you can say a town of 10K is inner city) got so fed up with ghetto attire that they forced mandatory uniforms upon students last year.

I would've hated it in highschool, but now that I have kids, I totally support it. All schools should have enforced dress codes. You're there to learn and be prepared for your future as an adult, not to stare at boobs and see who can look like the biggest thug. If thats your thing, you can go the nudie bar and prison when you grow up.

I'm not exactly sure how baggy pants and "graphic" t-shirts are that distracting in class. In my high school they had rules about too short skirts/shorts (had to be longer than arm length) and sleeveless shirts. I also think both of those are retarded too. It's really up to the parents to decide what to allow their children to wear.

I don't know. In school I was never distracted in class by girls who had massive cleavage but then again I realized when it was time to learn and when it was okay to look at boobies. I would assume other teenagers can separate the difference as well.

i'm going to assume i didn't understand your post especially since that Principal's name is Theresa.

as for this issue, they tried to enforce dress code here and it failed bigtime. i am supportive of some dresscode as i don't need the distraction in school, but with limit.

I have to tuck in my shirt (i would agree to this if i was forced to wear slacks)
and solid colored shirts are not allowed (wtf? its not like theres a pink t shirt gang)

Dress codes suck, especially uniforms. At my school, they cry about the littlest thing and how it's a 'distraction' to the learning process. Such as earrings for the girls(they can only wear stud earrings), and hoodies...they banned those, makes no sense at all.

Who gives a crap. I went to a school right in the downtown. Girls dressed like whores, guys dressed like thugs. I think the only rule was no bandannas.

People that were there to learn, did. Those that were there to stare and jack off, did.

Schools shouldn't force you to learn. That's what the real world's for.

Private school nothing. There's plenty of public schools that rival and even beat private schools in academia (albeit not usually the inner city ones).

Think of this though. If public schools had already been enforcing dress codes, the whole goth/black clothing uproar that occured after Columbine would have never happened.

I would have been against a dress code when I was in HS, but I'm certainly for it now.

You really cant force someone to do anything. You can tell them to sit there and listen but if they dont want to they can just day dream off

I never understood the big deal... When I was in school, ALL the girls dressed sexy. You just don't notice it because it's all around you.

Painted on jeans, short skirts, etc. It was just part of the scenery.

::shrug::

The only things that shouldn't be allowed are gang and drug/alcohol related items. A shirt with a pot leaf shouldn't be allowed. That's it though.
