A 12-year-old boy was mauled to death Friday inside his Sunset District apartment by his family?s two pit bulls, San Francisco police said.

The boy, who was not identified, was attacked at 711 Lincoln Way across from Golden Gate Park at about 3:15 p.m., police said. He was with his mother and two siblings at the time of the attack.

A police officer shot and killed one of the two dogs when the dog prevented him from entering the apartment, a police spokesman said. The other dog was captured inside the apartment.

Paramedics tried and failed to resuscitate the boy. Further details were not immediately available.

Lincoln Way was reported closed between 7th and 10th avenues.

So much for getting a pair of dogs to protect your family.

Not too long ago, there was apitbull attck up near me, took 9 bullets before it went down. Its really sad to hear about these types of things. One day people will learn that pitbulls may not be the safest pets.

One of my best friends has a pitbull and its the sweetest nicest dog you will ever meet. It's all about how you raise them and treat them.

could it be ? 3 times today I get to say.... I BLAME THE PARENTS. The dogs' and the kid's.

similar incident near me only a few years ago... several pitbulls mauled a little girl when she was left alone with the dogs. It was in a small community too, sad thing...

You know, I'm usually of the same mindset, that it's the owners who are to blame, not the animals. But I think in the case of pitbulls, they have such a history of being gentle one second and ripping your larynx out the next that I think people should just stay away from them. I'm sure this family thought their dogs were so cute and gentle and lovey-dovey, and I'm sure they were. But all it takes is for one of their abnormal neurons to fire and it's Frankenmutt eating your ass.

Pitbulls are illegal in denmark for that very reason.

But it can happen with every kind of dog, just more likely to happen with them.

Hey, you get a pack of them little suckers on you and you're in trouble. They're like piranhas.

that's so sad 🙁

with pitbulls i'm no longer sure : i know for fact you can raise them to be vicious and mean.. but i'm starting to doubt if it's possble for them to be well behaved. But then again, that's mainly from limited exposure and media crap..

still sucks 🙁

Dogs, including pitbulls, are a product of how they're treated. The reason pits have a stereotype for being dangerous dogs is that, if treated badly, they're some of the most dangerous - thus every animal-abusing idiot and his 10 brothers all want pitbulls and many get them. They treat them badly and stuff like this inevitably happens, which only worsens the reputation. It's BS, stupid people are to blame - not the breed.

Animal Agression can be in the genetics, too. I'm told purebreds can be more agressive, in general.

We have two jack russel terriers. One is purebred female, and she is hyper agressive against other dogs. The non purebred one is about the laziest, harmless creature on the earth. Since we don't abuse the dogs...I think its safe to say agression can be linked to genetics as well as treatment. Nature and nurture.

Anecdotes mean nothing, you could just as likely have gotten a purebreed less aggressive than the non-purebreed. I own a purebred shih tsu who wouldn't harm a fly. Like I said, many idiots buy pitbulls, it's a strong fashion statement and part of a 'tough-guy' image in many urban areas.

Pitbulls have been overbred to be aggressive. if I see one off a leash, I will shoot it on site. No waiting for the owner to come and get it because I am scared that it will attack.

They are always the 'sweetest nicest dog' until they eat your kids. Hell, one can have a bear, tiger, snake, thinking they so sweet and nice. Just wait 'till their instinct kick in.

Just waiting for the pitbull apologists to come streaming in.

Dogs are not totally a product of how they're treated. Every dog has instinct, and it varies from dog to dog. Every dog also has certain physical attributes, which also vary.

You can't "teach" a golden retriever to apply 2,000 lbs/sq. in. of force with their jaw...something a pitbull can do.

I'm sure other breeds are capable of attacking humans too. The reason you don't hear about other breeds is because their attacks are typically non-fatal. But when a pit-bull applies a ton per square inch of force clamping down on your neck, or snapping the bones in your legs, you're dead meat.

Communities need to get the whip crackin' and start banning these dogs from their neighborhoods and cities.

Totally agreed. It's sad seeing people saying 'it's all human's fault, the dog is innocent'.

Lol nothing like a good bout of sensationalism

Bottom line: if I ever have neighbors who decide to keep pitbulls on my block, near my children, they better hope to god I never see it without a leash on public property.

With all the negative press pitbulls have recieved in the news, you have a free pass to shoot and kill a loose one without repercussion.

Genetics can play a part in canine aggression.

I agree, some people buy pitbulls for the wrong reasons. Mistreating an animal can bring out its aggression. But it's entirely possible that a dog that you treat like royalty becomes an aggressive one.

And I'm not sure I'd blame you - they are indeed more dangerous than the average dog - but it's because they're more likely to be owned by an idiot than the average dog.
