Uhhh, 12 hour shifts are not great if you get paid for 12 hours. Assuming you're a full time employee who normally works 40 hours a week, then 4 of those hours are overtime and should be paid at time and a half (or better) - so, if you work 12, you should be getting paid for 14.
(Or in the case of my son, he works 16 a day and gets paid for 32)

edit: Hal, they're linesmen. With this hurricane, they've been going since 6 this morning.

Yes, Linemen will work 16 hour shifts during storms. I was lucky enough to be working for the local power company as a power distribution engineer when an ice storm came thru and decimated a good portion of our area.

All hands on deck, so I walked lines and called in damages/organized linemen to repair the damage. All of this was in sub-zero temperatures in snow and ice. 16 hours per day for 7 days straight.

The big difference was, Linemen make time and a half for 8 hours per day, time and a half all of Saturday, and double time on Sunday (at $30+ per hour). While I, as a salary employee, received my regular salary, and no comp time. :(

I've done enough 10 and 11hr shifts, and I've worked my share of 16hr days. Too many have been for free or minimum wage. That's what stings the most. It's Brutes McGee. Not much you can do to cut the pain of it.

This is what I'm thinking, I'm going to try and swap my shift so I can go home earlier...

I've done three this week and was left in limbo anticipating one today. Suck it up.

Pfft. I pull a 76 hour hour shift once a month. 7 am friday to 11am Monday.

I've done a few of those style lately too but nothing like 2005. Six straight weeks at 105+ hours per week. Averaged 15+ hours per day, 7 days a week for over 45 days without a day off. Now that damn near killed me (and my spirit).

I did get paid overtime (1.5 times regular rate) at that point in life so the money was good.

I do 11.5 - 13 hour shifts daily (my employees work 10's) but that's only 4 days a week. For a 3 day weekend every week it seems worth it to me. I'm also on my feet the entire time so I've found that good shoes are essential. I tried many brands and styles of shoes and in in the end I just wear running shoes and those seem to do the trick.

Good luck!

I do 12 hrs every shift, was doing 24 hrs. Normal now.

I've never understood that (I'm assuming medical field). How can you function on a 24 hours shift, especially something so critical as life saving.

Longest I've worked is 19 hours and it flat out killed my body and soul to do it.

My girlfriend does three 13 hours shifts a week. I don't know how she does it, but having 4 days off would be nice.

24 is my norm also. 48 if I pick up overtime contiguous with my shift.

With approval I have worked 60 a few times. 60 on/12off/48on was my worst stretch. Done that a few times. Spent the 12 off at work due to travel conditions also. Blizzard/Hurricanes mostly.

So I would say one 12hr shift should not be fatal.....
