The real deal here is if you record live music. Nomad will take a line input, so
if you add a powered microphone, you can record better live quality than a Minidisc
and nearly as good as a DAT recorder, for less than $100 (AC/AR). A MD will
set you back about that much and will then require a stand-alone deck if you
want to convert to CDR while staying digital all the way. A DAT will set you
back more than $600 and you will still need a digital input computer card to
convert to CDR. With Nomad, you can record in WAV, transfer to your computer
and burn CDRs with no conversion from digital to analog at any point.
It also makes transfer easier than MD or DAT. It is a taper's dream. The battery
life is weak compared to the newer Nomad's (which also boast better signal to
noise ratio), but they are 2.5X the price. This gives a good entry level machine
to get started with.
