The real deal here is if you record live music. Nomad will take a line input, so
if you add a powered microphone, you can record better live quality than a Minidisc
and nearly as good as a DAT recorder, for less than $100 (AC/AR). A MD will
set you back about that much and will then require a stand-alone deck if you
want to convert to CDR while staying digital all the way. A DAT will set you
back more than $600 and you will still need a digital input computer card to
convert to CDR. With Nomad, you can record in WAV, transfer to your computer
and burn CDRs with no conversion from digital to analog at any point.
It also makes transfer easier than MD or DAT. It is a taper's dream. The battery
life is weak compared to the newer Nomad's (which also boast better signal to
noise ratio), but they are 2.5X the price. This gives a good entry level machine
to get started with.

Have you tried this? Work ok? Can you adjust the input levels?

I used a Sony D6 pro recorder w/ external mic for years... $100 would be a nice upgrade... no more tapes!

If you use MusicMatch Jukebox, you can go to their website and download a small plugin that
will allow you to access the Nomad from MMJB...It works OK for synching with MMJB or for
dragging and dropping files/folders to the Nomad.

Is MMJB the best thing this side of iTunes? Did you pick up your unit at the B&M btw? I ordered online for delivery, but no shipment yet. My hunch is I will get the dreaded "out of stock" email early this week.

I picked up mine at the B&M. That way you can use the 10% off coupon and get it right away.

OK, I've tried using MusicMatch, RealOne, WMP9, Media Jukebox and Creative's PlayCenter3 with this thing. For just transferring files over, any of them will work. But for editing playlists, you can only use Media Jukebox or Creative's PlayCenter 3. In the end, when using the Nomad, I'm preferring PlayCenter3. You can manipulate about anything on the main unit with it, so it's the way to go imo. But for regular transferring without doing playlists, etc, you can use whatever you want.

some noob questions:

When you guys picked this up at BB, you then got the rebate printouts to mail later right?

The BB website lists free shipping so what was the benefit of going to the store? The 10% coupon?
I'm looking at these KLH speakers and the Nomad shipped for free. At that point I am not concerned about the 10% rebate unless there is one I can use online for the whole package? I'm figuring I will dish out $250 (nomad) + $80 (speakers) = $330 total then get a $100 and $50 rebate correct?

Is there anything I should know before making the online order?
Thanks.

Spongebobpalmbay--

I haven't tried it yet, but have a friend who has. I bought one that I haven't opened yet (waiting to be
sure they have them on Friday to get 10% off), but I downloaded the manual on their website and
read the instructions for recording. It has built in gain adjustment, so you don't seem to need a
volume controlled battery box. I'm assuming it has level monitor on it, but didn't see that in the manual
on first glance and haven't been able to try it yet. The friend who told me about it said he loves it
since it is so easy to transfer recordings to the computer (he was using a D7). Swapping NiMh batteries
for tapes is an added bonus, since they are cheaper and rechargeable.

I just scored the last one from BB. The first Nomad rang up without printing the coupons and the Sales Rep notice its was the wrong 10GB Nomad with the USB 2.0 supports. Must sure your rebates print out automatically or you'll be out of $150 in rebates.

I was trying to avoid this deal...but I was forced to jump in on it. As I have read the various posts I realized that a lot of folks are kinda missing an important fact here..simply...the price. I have 2 Iomega Hip Zips, 1 Intel Pocket Concert, 1 Nomad IIc, 3 Rio 600's and various other MP3 devices. I got most of these at great prices through this forum...but the simple fact of the matter is that very few of these retail/retailed for less than $150. The most built in memory any of these have is 120 mb (yeah I know the uses are meant to be different..you can not jog with the Juke) and I have spent a small fortune in click! discs and Smart Media cards of various sizes. 10 gb for less than $100!!!! Who cares about the battery issues at this price!!

I am still looking forward to a 1 gig Smart Media card (or equivalent technology). Now that will be cool.
In case you haven't figured it out yet. You need an ipod.

Here is a $50 rebate that I saw @ Amazon:

Might be the same as the other $50 rebate though (sorry, I did not look at the other one) but maybe this will work too.

VaG,

In case you haven't figured it out yet...that is a thread crap and a nef...it serves absolutely no beneficial purpose to this subject. While on the subject of Ipods, I will most likely be purchasing one of those also...I can afford it. Is VAG short for what I think it is? ;)

No hassle for me. Ordered online for in store pickup and I showed them the 10% coupon and the csr canceled the online sale and rang it up as a store purchase. Price is $224.99 minus the rebates.

My wallets happy now and my son will be happy at Christmas.

Curious--am I nuts or does this thing NOT have any way to random play/shuffle the music you want to hear? Anyone know how to do this???

@JuryDuty
I have used a 6gig nomad alot and I know that has all sorts of shuffles from completely random thru shuffled from certain playlists so I assume the newer 10gig model talked about here does the same, if not more. The thing that makes me mad is the crap USB. Then again you get what you pay for and I am not willing to pay $300 more for a 10gig ipod. This Nomad will be good for its intended use and the price AR can't be beat.

@Browny
The refurb speakers I am ordering say only online. Could I have them sent to the store as well? I guess either way I don't mind. The shipping on everything is free, on something this size that easily makes up for a $25 (from 10%) difference.
Where is this 10% coupon coming from anyways?

I did the Meijer's pricematch to $219, now making it $69 after rebates. Yummy. I'm going to SleezeBay my Nomad IIc with docking cradle for $100, so that'll more than pay for it.

Outpost.com has it for $209 - $50 rebate. If your local Fry's has it in stock for that price, perhaps you can PM it down below $200 before rebates at Best Buy.

Hey, I think this is HOT news about the Nomad 1:

There is beta firmware for the Nomad 1 (from Creative, but beta) available on the site nomadness.net.
This is version 4.00 beta.

Anyway, the 4.00 firmware, which people seem to be very happy with, gives you Nomad 1 the
same OS as the Creative Nomad 3! If you read the reviews, people are generally quite happy with the
Nomad 3 OS, and only sorta happy with the Nomad 1 OS. But after the flash...The only thing you
don't have (I think) are the firewire and USB2 connections...

Turns this deal from hot to hotter for me :)

Has anyone updated the firmware to 4.0? Whaddya think? Someone on Nomadness.net seemed to be saying boot time increased to over 2 minutes!

And if you don't like the interface from your computer, try the notmad jukebox interface. The software is like a windows explorer, and u can synk you songs in your computer with it. I purchased the sofware (small cost) and the support u get from Red is fast and helpful!
