I may have missed it, but is there a reason we are racing Tom's Hardware for only a week?

Good question, Pokey!

Purch is putting up a cash prize to be donated to "Child's Play" in the name of the winning team but there was a little problem with the timing. Purch wants to get this organized and completed ahead of the December holiday season, so that the donation can be put towards holiday gifts for all those children.

So we have this "100 Yard/Meter Dash" event which should be a lot of fun. :smilecat:

Welcome to all our friends from Tom's Hardware! We'll try to not be to HARD on you guys. :tongueclosed:

Haha . Hey btw , how many times has Tom's won the Chimp Challenge ?
:tonguewink:
Good luck all the same !

In all seriousness though , Tom's is producing quite well right now.Be interesting to see where Anandtech ends up when they quit sandbagging.
heheh.

This should be fun !
Cheers everyone !

Well, that one is easy. The owner of Tom's Hardware and Anandtech wants to give a donation to a childrens' charity for Christmas gifts. To be able to do that and for the gifts to arrive before Christmas, the race will last only a week.
Oh, BTW, we returned from rural India yesterday evening (or was it today very early?). I'll be posting more for the race tomorrow or Tuesday, when I have read all the posts in this thread ..

The third post with the racers has been updated. Now 17 participants in the TeAm AnadTech "internal race".
We need more racers!

Well, hopefully I made up for some of our missing racers. I used my last 6 months retirements savings to buy hardware for this race. Sitting at about 6.5 million ppd right now.

I am retired, I mean my last 6 months of every dime I had left after bills.

Oh, and I just spent another $200 on credit. It seems (no proof yet) that PCI-E 1.0 is killing my ppd on a socket 775 motherboard using a 1070, so I have to upgrade.....
And disgusting enough, I get a 4 ghz (turbo) quad core cpu and a PCI_E 3.0 motherboard for $115 total !

Am I supposed to sandbag? I think I have all I can muster online right now, hopefully about 1.6M per day or so. I hope that is considered a meaningful contribution.

Oh, yes. Anything that adds is meaningful. The differences between the subteams in previous races were as low as 1,5% ...

crashtech, that's actually a very substantial ppd! :D Koul! Take a look at the "Racer's Total" line, for the ENTIRE RACE, in years past. You will see your ppd is impressive.

As for sandbagging, not sure what you mean there.

Being new, I didn't know if we were supposed to keep the extent of our capability a secret from the other teams. I could conceivably bring a bit more to bear in a few weeks if my workflow stays the way it is, but there is Christmas to pay for as well.

Yea I'm sandbagging .
But , it doesn't matter.
yes , my output will increase at some time before the race.
But , everyone will bring the max on day 1 , so really , it's irrelevant.

Here's my plans :

I need 3 new video cards. I'm waffling on 1070's or 1080's .....What's the best bang for buck ?

:D

Even though MY 1070 is not working as well as Tony's, see my thread on it. 1070 wins $/ppd The 1080 does (on average ) 730k ppd, and the 1070 does 631k ppd average, mine is only doing about 540k ppd, but I may know why. I have a new motherboard coming to test my theory. But the factory OC'ed EVGA 1080 is $680, and I found a 1070 OC'ed for $400, so big difference in price, for a nominal ppd gain.

see here: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/gpu-ppd-in-folding-at-home.2489845/

And here is my current ppd (on a good day)
