I ordered a 13" MBA w/4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD last week. It's finally within my country's border. Hopefully I will be getting it tomorrow. :D

iPad doesn't have enough RAM to write anything too large, talk about compiling or even debugging. It needs some 1GB RAM or even more if you need to accomplish that task while running everything else on top.

I'm considering buying a MBA, but my usecase is mostly just surfing the internet, IM client, and coding.

what? you don't need an i7 with 8gb of ram and a video card the size of my mac mini just to run microsoft word? nonsense.

;)

Being the gadget enthusiast that I am, I always want to get the best of the best as far as specs but even more so now that I have it in my hands, I have no regrets so far.

Plus I have my Mac Pro with 8GB RAM that I have for the heavy lifting in my office.

1080p MP4s will playback no problem, I tested that in the store, but that uses Quicktime which uses the 320m. Not sure about VLC on that score.

Returned it and ordered a refurb direct from Apple that's the maxed out upgrades.

For $200 more I think it''ll be worth it in the end.

I was on the fence for awhile on what to get, have some other thread here about it even.

EDIT: Just did a return on it through Amazon. I was watching my disk consumption in just the half a day I've used it and was already down to under 30GB free space. That just isn't going to cut it for me like I was hoping for. I haven't even put any media on it yet and have over 30GB of music.

So I ordered a return for it, will ship it back tomorrow.

But I already ordered the top spec 11" refurb direct from Apple. For $200 more I get double the RAM, double the disk space and a faster processor.

Wife wasn't to happy about being out the money for both until the refund comes through from Amazon but I didn't want the refurb to become unavailable before I ordered it.

I think had I not gotten the bigger drive, I'd be regretting it over and over.

I think 128 gigs is the perfect amount of hdd space for a laptop. 64 is too little. I have 256 on my 13, and I don't think I'll ever fill it up especially considering I keep movies on an external drive. Same with the ram, 2 gigs is too little - you need 4 gigs.

Yeah, when I looked at the MBA I considered the 4GB RAM upgrade almost necessary, so that was another $100 on the price. I'd be a bit on the fence about storage space though since most of my stuff exists on my home network.

I like the airs ... but I have zero reason for a laptop, let alone a mac :D

Nice contribution.

OP, were you able to determine if it could playback 1080p MKVs and at what bitrate?

If you didn't put any media on it... what were you filling it up with?

I just reformatted my Mac and with my basic apps back in place I'm using about 20 some odd GB so far.

When I get my air I'm just planning on keeping all my media on smallish / portable external drive.

I am with you on that. I keep all my stuff on my desktop, since it has more internal storage than any laptop possibly could these days (just bumped it to 8TB total), and have a 250GB external that I use with my PBook. I won't be keeping my music on my MBA, maybe just photos and some small videos (J*zz in my Pants comes to mind :)) so I think I should be fine with 64GB.

Tax refund coming in? :)

Came in, went back out. Its been 4.5 years since my last new laptop, and for the past year and a half I have been using a circa 2004 PowerBook, the MBA is going to be a revelation.

Plus, Glass Melon-Farming Trackpad!!!

What are you doing on the laptop that necessitates 4GB of RAM? I'm surfing the web, with 5 tabs open, ive got open office open with a document up as well as itunes running and i have about 750MB used. If i ran my VM of winXP i MIGHT push it up to 1.25GB maybe 1.30GB used.

I'm not doubting you, im just curious what you do with a super portable laptop that necessitates 4GB of memory.

I personally wanted more longevity out of the system, since it isn't upgradeable in the future. Right now it is just going to be my web surfing, movie watching, writing system, with some torchlight thrown in, but sometimes my needs shift, and I would rather have a system that could do the job a little bit than one that simply cannot at all.

Back when I had my MacBook, and a more capable, more powerful desktop, the MacBook was still my primary system.

Yeah I could see that. THe 2GB in this air is doing me just fine, and i see having this machine for a solid 2 more years. Sure 4GB would be better, but its still not NECESSARY. It's not like im running a lab of VMs or anything, heh.
