I just started to play games on my U2711 and it turn out even my rig can't handle 1440p so I turned it down to 1080p and then my screen is blurred out like it had Vaseline smeared all over it.

Is there a way to get around this. It look worst than my old 1050p monitor D:

If your running a nvidia card, try a custom resolution of 2400x1350.I run this on my 1080p monitor when performance permits and it sharpens the pic. Also i would run the settings at the lowest possible settings before i ever drop my resolution below native.

What game are you playing? (2) 660's should be enough power to play most games @ 1440.... I played numerous games, mostly max settings with AA @ 1440p on my GTX580....

If possible, keep your res at 1440p and lower setting like skip suggested. I play tiger woods 2008 on my Dell 2713 @ 1080p and it looks glorious.

I play tomb raider with all settings max except for Tressfx and I get random stutters. The frame rate averages above 40 but there moments where the game pause for a second and run at normal 40-50 fps again.

Once I turned down to 1080p and add TressFX I got 60 FPS easily without random pauses, of course my game look like it smeared with Vaseline now.

and did you say 580 or meant to say 780? a 660 easily trade blows with the 580 and it can't run most games at max settings and AA at 1080p

I've never tried this on my 1440p panels. What video card do you have, OP? The GTX 660? Might be worth bumping up to a 280X, a GTX 770, etc, to run 1440 native.

am I going to have to start complaining again that going below native res will always look blurry? :p some of you still deny this for some reason.

OP just turn some settings and stay at native res. if you cant turn down enough settings to play games smoothly at your native res then you need a gpu upgrade. I would never buy a monitor with a res that was too demanding for my system.

This is also a good idea. Start with turning AA either off entirely or down to 2x.

Ya 580, depends on the game, but I rarely played a game I couldn't max out @ 1080p on my 580...And like I said, it handled all games I played @ 1440p....you just might not be able to max all the settings and little or no AA....your SLI 660 will get you by easily@1440p till you can afford an upgrade...just lower your settings, not your res....

Tom raider is a beast even without Tressfx turn off all AA...and set res to 1440p....I bet you don't even miss AA...

I have two 660 in SLI, which is about as fast as the 280x. I would get a 290X but at the moment the price gouging from retailer kept me from getting one.

Its coming down though. Was looking at Newegg last night and saw one at 579 and a couple under 680, all with custom coolers. Was considering getting a second one.

depends on your definition of playable and "max" settings as there are plenty of games that a 580 cant truly max at 1080 and get anywhere near 60 fps or even 50 fps.

and Tomb Raider is not all that demanding without tressfx and SSAA. a 780 can get well over 80 fps at 2560 with ultra settings in that game.

Your 2 GTX 660's are still way powerful. LCDs are meant to look sharpest at their native resolution. Game at 2560x1440. At that res you don't really need AA. Without AA your cards will handle that res just fine.

660ti SLI >= 780ti so he has enough GPU power ,something else is happening .

I wouldn't say that, at most a GTX 770 and this is if it is scaling 100%.

@OP below

Only ever use Native resolution otherwise it does look like poo. Two GTX 660's will run 1440p no matter what game so something software wise has to be doing it to you.

I couldn't find any BM with 660ti SLI vs 780ti , timeframe is bad but 660ti SLI would be around titan speed , somewhere between 780 to 780ti as long as res is kept low max 2560 .
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012..._gtx_660_ti_gc_3gb_sli_review/11#.Uy2Mk-L4KlY
770 =680 OC and 660ti SLI is way faster than 680 , 760 is slightly faster than 660ti and just look at Mars 760 its faster than 780ti
The downside is your limited with memory so high res and high FSAA or both maybe issues depending on game/app.

Anyway should have no problem with 1080 or 1440 .

I don't know what you guys are talking about with all this "native res" mumbo-jumbo...I'm playing baldur's gate at 1280x720 on my u2711 and it looks great! :)

that is 1/4 res so it has best chance of looking good , 2x width and height .But 1080 is not with 1440 .
how does 1080 look on desktop and other apps ?

Haven't seen any comments on this but what about playing the games in windowed mode? I still do this often with certain games so I can easily jump in and out of the game window. Works really well with FPS games, but RTS (Starcraft 2) run better in fullscreen in my experience.

Tomb Raider I would think would work in windowed mode but I've never played it so someone correct me if I'm wrong. This may allow you to keep slightly higher settings too.

Unfortunately, unless you force full screen mode the game will not work with SLI

This is not correct. SLI does indeed work in windowed mode. Unless you're playing a game that is an exception (what game are you referring to?), but if it has an SLI profile it will also work with SLI (utilizing both GPUs) in windowed mode. I play a ton of games while alt tabbing for teamspeak and all that sort of thing, and fullscreen windowed does utilize both GPUs fully for games with SLI profiles.

Oh yeah, as far as the topic goes. Generally speaking, if you're on a desktop computer monitor - using anything other than native resolution is a no-go. I've used a ton of monitors over the years, both TN and IPS, and the one common denominator is that they all looked rather terrible with scaling at non native resolutions. Ultrabooks? Are kinda sorta usable at non native res for gaming. You definitely get the "vaseline" treatment with PC desktop screens, though. CRTs didn't have this problem, although they had a ton of unique drawbacks all on their own. (and no, I don't prefer CRTs over LCD/LED/IPS/etc)
