103.5 Degree Fever

bjc112

Lifer
How bad is this?

I was recovering well from my cold/flu .. Went into work today because I had things to do, and now I feel plain sh!tty.. Its back up to 103 now ( was at around 99 this morning ) and I am pumping Advil and the liikes into me..

Last night I broke out in a sweat that COMPLETELY soaked my shirt, I thought I was home free from there, but apparently not!

That's pretty high. I'd suggest taking a cool shower. It will feel like ice (even if you only have the water down to about 90F) but it will help you cool down. Also, keep a cool wet cloth on your forehead and eyes for a while. Try to get your fever down to at least 102F.

I am looking around the net, and it seems that anything under 105-106 isn't awful.. I really don't want to take Advil as it appears to be GOOD to have a fever, but at the same time, my head is THROBING if I don't take any. .

There is an old story about how a doctor would figure out if you were ill or not......

If the patient was lying in bed, moaning, groaning, puking etc, the doctor would do the examination.
As he (it was always a he in those days) was walking out, he would drop some money.
20 minutes later, he would come back in.
If the money was still there, he knew they were BAAADD.

What's the highest fever you can run without dying?

106 is when you start having brain damage.

as for 103.5, it's not really that bad...I've had 104 and was hallucinating...But to each his own, right? 😉

but a call to your doctor can't hurt. Just make sure you're taking a fever reducing medicine and if needed, take a slightly cold bath (not super cold, just a little below normal body temp to slowly bring temp down) and try to lay in the tub if possible, shower if not. other than that just relax, wear light clothing, don't bundle yourself up too much, but keep light blankets on you.

idea is to bring your temp slowly down (hence the light clothing and light blankets)...that is unless it starts shooting up like crazy, then you should get ice and a very cold bath.

Edit: Also, depending on what your standard body temp is...Mine's usually around 96.3 so 7 degrees would be alot. But the info above is what the doctors in my ER usually tell patients.

MoPho said good stuff

and you should definitely get on Tylenol/acetaminophen rather than the Advil/ibuprofen as the Tylenol is a much better fever reducer. If it gets much higher, I would definitely recommend calling your doc/going to a clinic.

med school?

Ditto I was going to answer but that hits the nail on thehead....it may also be a good idea to head to the ER if the fever doesnt break or if your doctor tells you so, I know in my hospital we dont like anything above 101ish simply because if you can catch it early it's *sometimes* easier to treat.

At least you dont have atypical sepsis like a patient I had a couple weeks back...her temp hovered around 90.0F for about a week despite our every effort to warm her(warming blankets/pads etc) Ah well I hope ya get better soon!

place a heatsink on you neck and a rubber band over it to hold it down, youl be set.

and get some pvc tubing over your mouth and to the heatsink to pipe your breath for proper venting.
