Oldfart ~ yep, that should tell ya something ;)

yes, the review is gonna be cut short. i will be posting what results i did get. but i have to admit that after i did the preliminary testing, i lost interest.

i cant justify the expendature of this card over a well overclocked ti4600 ~ nor the time it takes to give it a proper review :(

I am sorta confused as to why you ran this card with such a low resolution and no FSAA or AF (at least not that I noticed?) From what I can see Thugs, you really didn't give the card a chance to impress you, but maybe the noise was just too much.

here's a few screenshots of Serious Sam on my gf4 ti4600. (all quality options maxed)

comparsions are:
plain~
2xAA~ (look at the door frame and the gun)
QuincAA~ (look at the door frame and the gun)
8xAF~ (look at the floor)

keep a close eye on the fps counter ;)

* warning ~ these are uncompressed BMPs and the zip file is 2.6mb.
* im only posting these cause they happen to show an excellent comparison ;)

All this hype about AA and AF and that's the difference? For crying out loud...there's no way in the world you'd notice the difference while playing, and look at the difference in frame rates!!! I can't believe people are making a big deal about this...:p

Nice comparison Thugsrook, thanks for the info...;):)

i feel the same way.....

if you can actually notice a visual difference with that junk on ~ then you aint playin the game! :p ;) :)

IMHO: a smooth panning screen is way more important :)

<EDIT> those shots were taken in 800res to make it more noticable.
in 1024+ resolutions the difference is much less noticable.

Those shots are not the best for showing the benefits of good filtering. Too small and dark of an area. It's kind of a personal thing. For me, jaggies don't bother me too much, but I HATE blurry textures! I don't use AA too much but do like to crank up the anisotropic filtering to get rid of the blurry textures. The thing is, nVidia cards includuding GF4 and GF5 take a huge framerate hit once you use the filters. With an ATi 9700, you can crank that stuff up without the framerate going into the toilet. That is the benefit Ati has over nV at the moment (besides price, and noise).

oldfart ~ thats exactly what im talking about here ~ excuses.

what i mean is, what would be a good scene to show the improvements?
only certain scenes will show improvement?
only certain scenes will "look better" for that fps hit?
how long are you gonna stare at that "certain scene" anyways?

are you a camper? .... j/k! ;)

you should probably pay more attention to the 10 warebulls and 20 klesk that are heading straight for ya ;)

YEA BABY! ;) :)

>>what i mean is, what would be a good scene to show the improvements?
A large open bright area. That tiny little dark room looking at a doorway is hardly much to look at. Maybe Dunes (not the "dunes" part. Any shot where you can see the ground for some distance. BF1942 is another game that looks much better with the filtering. I cant use it since my FPS goes to cr@p.

>>only certain scenes will show improvement?
Sort of. Anisotropic filter makes distant textures more in focus. If there is no distance to see (like your shots), you cant see the benefit. AA will matter most on sweeping curves and angles.

>>only certain scenes will "look better" for that fps hit?
No, all scenes. Some more than others, some games more than others. For instance fight and auto racing games have a great improvemnet with AA.

>>how long are you gonna stare at that "certain scene" anyways?
The visual improvement of AA and anisotropic filtering are well known and documented in many articles all over the net. It is not a debateable topic. If you are happy playing 1024 x 768 with no AA and no anisotopic fitering, there is no need to move beyond a GF4 level card at this time. What a 9700 type card brings to the table is the ability to use the filters, get the improved IQ, and still have very playable framerates.

>>are you a camper? .... j/k! ;)
In SS, I dont think you could camp even if you wanted to.

>>you should probably pay more attention to the 10 warebulls and 20 klesk that are heading straight for ya ;)
Only 10? What are you, a "tourist"? ;)

>>YEA BABY! ;) :)
Fun game. Mrs Oldfart likes to team up and play Coop on the lan. Lots of fun.
