i did do bright large open area (Dunes facing the city) it showed less of an improvement then the dark area.

i sent Mikki a ton of various screenshots and weve been discusing this for the last few days. i deleted the "other" screenshots, but perhaps he still has them.

yes, i will admit that racing and flying games that "pan" more slowly can get away with using these settings, even in high res.

actually i play all games in 1152+ res. racing and flying games in 1600 ;)
monitor refresh rates will determine my resolution for FPS games ~ i hate going below 85hz and prefer 100hz.

oh you sure can camp in SS ~ just rocket jump to a safe place and pickoff all the monsters ;)
hop a wall and skip half the level too :Q

Serious Samantha? :Q ......YEA HONEY! ;)

<EDIT> i only play in Serious mode :D
(mental mode is too easy, its just hard mode with translucent monsters)

Serious Sam IMO isn't a good game to get a visual diffrences on, because the game isn't stressing the card. It's like saying, what is going to look better while playing orignal mario. a GeForce 2 or a GeForce FX... Maybe that wasn't the greatest example... but, you get the picture. :p

BattleField 1942 is a great game. When you crank stuff up, you instantly notice the diffrence... The quality of the game is much much better, and for me, I'm using a LCD, so you don't really notice a diffrence from 75 FPS to 150 (Counter-Strike).

I think if you used a more graphic intensive game, you would of gotten better results.... OR, I could be totally wrong, and maybe the FX is just crap. :p

Again, the IQ benefits of AA and anisotropic filtering is not a debatable topic. It makes a large improvement in IQ. Its is a well documented fact. Some people don't seem to care too much about it, some do. Each person has their own opinion on what looks good and what doesn't.

Fact is, if you want high res, AA and anisotropic filtering and good framerates, the 9700/9800 are whee its at. I still have a Ti4600. A buddy has a 9700 Pro and the difference is huge. I can crank up all the filtering on his rig, play BF1942 at smooth framerates. My 4600 is a slide show if I do the same. Note that BF1942 has some huge maps. The anisotropic filtering really makes it look nice.

If you want an interesting discussion on this topic, start a thread on the video forum. You will get many responses.

oldfart, if you still have a Ti4600, why don't ya hook us up with some screenshots/comparisons? :) And as far as this subject goes, I don't play the same games you guys do, so I can't debate with examples. My opinion as it stands right now is that the FX/9700 cards are definitely not worth spending the money on over my Ti4400 because of what I said before---there's no way I'm going to notice minute differences while playing. Maybe everyone else is so good that they can take time to enjoy the scenery, but I'm not. The only other thing is benchmark scores, you willing to pay a few hundred dollars to up your benchmark scores?

I will say this tho...because I'm not a "gamer", and because I don't like any of the games that most do, I don't have as much of an interest in this as most of you, so maybe I'm a bit biased....but I'm sorry buddy, I've seen nothing out there that's made me say "wow". Guess the places I go for info are different from every elses too...

I have to agree with oldfart on the point of BF1942.It looks down right gorgeous with my Radeon 9700 Pro with AA and AF running. It also looked and played really smooth.Yes,certain games don't warrant running AA or AF.BF1942 is one of those games that does make a difference with the 9700 Pro.Some games are more CPU dependant like Serious Sam I believe.

Yeah, that's why I mentioned about my preferences...there's nothing I do that warrants buying a new card, and I'm not spending that much money just to up my bench scores. I suppose if I did play the games everyone else does I'd have a different opinion. Because I don't play games that much, and the games I do play aren't what everyone else plays, maybe I shouldn't even be commenting on this. I guess I'm just representing the minority that doesn't play games...hehe :p:)

One thing I do know is there are less problems with Nvidia cards so I can see why some people prefer them.

this debate is pointless ~ there is no right or wrong or even something inbetween, its just 100% opinion.
even when looking at my screenshots that i posted, everyone is seeing something different.
ill bet that we couldnt even agree on which shot looks the best :p

right now there seems to be 4 schools of thought...

those that like AA/AF~
those that dont~
those that play dx9 games~
those that play dx7 and dx8 games~ (or at least those games are more important to them)

which one(s) do you belong to? ;)

You're forgettin some categories (that I fall into). ;)

I don't care for AA/AF, I like them, but I dun need them. And I still have DX6 games :)

Old school gaming is where it's at :p

How about OpenGL? Quake/1/2/3, Half-Life, Serious Sam, etc. UT (not UT2K3) rocks in OpenGL with S3TC high res textures installed.

Are there any DX9 games out yet?

I just remembered I have some old images uploaded from when I was messing with anisotropic filtering in Counterstrike. There is no AA used here, just AF.
CS_No_Aniso
CS_with_Aniso
I cant remember what level of AF I was using. These shots are old from my Radeon 64 Vivo!

You have to cut-n-paste the links because of the stupid Tripod hosting.

I am one of those who enjoys AA and AF, but I only have a Ti 4200. I still get decent framerates for the most part too.

oldfart, care to elaborate on this ? As I remember, it was problematic at best in UT but if you have it running smoothly, I'd love to see some screenies or info on how to install/use it. TIA

It works very well. Not problematic at all. Its looks way better and runs faster to boot. To do it, follow these steps: You must be on UT version 436.

1) Install the high res textures off UT CD #2. If you dont have it, there is no point going any further
2) Download the 436 OpenGLDrv.dll from the Unreal tech website
The link seems to be broken. LMK if you need the file
3) Unzip and install in the \UnrealTournament\System directory
4) Modify your UnrealTournament.ini file to look like this: These are my tweaked settings, they may not be optimal for your setup.
