Thanks! I'm definately in on this one. I bought a 50 pack of these discs from shop4tech about 2 months ago and haven't had a single coaster and I'm fixing to run out. I think I paid around $30 for the 50 pack back then. It's unbelievable how fast the prices have been dropping on these lately.

Last batch of 50 Ritek G04's I got from Shop4Tech would only burn at 2X in my Pioneer A05/105 but they did burn at 4X in my Lite-On 811S. Several others have had the same problem with Ritek's recently. I also got 100 of the Sonic's from them and they would only burn consistently at 2X but I got those crappy Yi Jhan ones. It's a crap shoot when you order the Sonic's. I'm going to try the Prodisc's next time I order.

The last batch of 50 pack Ritek G04's which had "Version 2.0" printed on the top among other text (not the old red/white packaging, these are in the blue and some other color wrapping shown @ Newegg and Shop4Tech), would only burn at 2x on my Sony even though previously all I had purchased before in DVD-R media were 50 pack Ritek G04's in the red/white packaging which they don't make anymore in DVD-R format. I was very dissapointed in that, the discs are fine but the reduction in burning speed was cut in half which did not sit well with me and I vowed to order a different brand/make next purchase. Even though I had no bad burns or inconsistent looking media in this new pack I couldn't see buying Ritek G04's again for twice the price of the Sonics. So I'm ordered 100 of those to try out but I agree it's probably a crapshoot right now unless you buy Taiyo Yuden, etc.. I won't pay over a certain amount per disc however, it is not that important to me since right now we are only buying 4.7gb single layer discs anyhow. It would be a different matter if the discs were able to store a full movie without compressing from dual layer tp single, I'd be willing to pay more for quality brand double layer discs once they settle down. It is still a matter of how important your backups are to you I suppose. Some people are willing to pay near $1.00 per 4.7gb DVD-R but I would not pay over .40 cents at the moment.

Just to some it up, I strongly believe Ritek G04's have gone down in quality to some extent lately. Although I have still not had any bad burns or inconsistent looking media yet.

ReiAyanami: The non-free version of DVDInfoPro has a way to check for errors on DVD media. It's a very nice app indeed. Be careful which version you download, one is the free version which doesn't have a lot of features like the error checking and one is a pay version even though both have "Pro" in their names. I believe you might be able to run an ad-injected version of DVDInfoPro without paying and get the full functionality although I'm not sure. It also shows the full media id code of your CD/DVD discs.

Bah... I remember back when he was still coding the application... it was free, but then again it didn't have all the features as now. Obviously I've had to switch media checkers since then.

In my opinion the Sonic Bulk are junk. I bought 2 spindles of 100 of them and have burnt about 40 of them. They are the white top 4x. I have had only2 come out that didnt have severe errors on them. The rest burnt all the way through just fine but had tons and tons of errors. I burnt them on a Liteon 811S and Plextor 708a

I think it's silly to write off things as junk or excellent- discs differ on a disc by disc basis. And as far as certain discs having errors, it really is highly dependent on what drive they're written on. I've heard some people say disc X is great and so I'd try it and they'd turn out like rubbish. It's good to say "This disc doesn't work well in this drive." It's bad to say "This disc sucks because it doesn't work in my drive." I've had Taiyou Yuden discs turn into coasters in various drives even (not my fault, mind you- CMC discs worked fine in the drive). Anyway, my 2 cents.

Just got the 100pk of Sonic 1-2x DVD-R's from Shop4Tech. Media code is LONGTEN so these are supposedly the lower quality version next to the MUST version. I'm gonna burn a bunch of DVD-R's now and then see if I get any irregularites on playback in my Mintek 1600 standalone player. Also going to recheck them for any errors after a week or two in DVDInfoPro.

Edit:
Well just burned some of them,
Unlike the last Ritek 4x G04's I received these Sonic 1-2x LONGTEN's are actually able to write at 4x speed. My last 50pk of Ritek G04's (red/white package) purchased a couple months ago would say they WOULD be able to write at 4x in Nero but it would take exactly 30 mins which would mean a 2x burn. The Sonic 1-2x are actually writing at 4x although I don't know what quality of a burn they give. I'm going to burn random movies and data files and keep them for a couple weeks and then retest for errors with DVDInfoPro and do some video playback tests on my standalone DVD player for the video burns. I'm pretty happy at this point, hope they hold up. After the last 50 pack of Ritek G04's I tried I had a bad feeling that my Sony DVD burner was on the verge of failing because of the low burning speed of the new Version 2.0 G04's (all my old Ritek G04's used to burn at 4x up until the last batch which only did 2x) but I'm glad it was just the media that was giving those results.

Also I read some reports of sometimes receiving discs which have visible irregularities in the writing surface half way into the 50pk spindle but I'm not seeing any here.. looked at the bottoms of most of them and all the same.

Please be sure to post the resukts. I will go back and do some tests on the failed ones I have still sitting here. I'll let you know my results for the Sonic media as well.

I got the same email about them being out of stock until Fri. It's still worth the wait though. Unfortunately, I just ran out of discs today :(

I ordered the Matrix DVD-R Media 4.7GB 1X-8X Bulk matt tops on thursday and receive my order tuesday. I've only had a chance to burn 12 or so. Average burn time was 9 mins 20 secs on a NEC 2510A. Watched one of the backups last night and it looked great (no skipping/artifacts). Sweet Deal and Great Service!!! You can't go wrong with these DVD's at this price. Thanks for the deal Snedman

Watched 4 of the DVD movies that I burned with the Sonic 1-2x [LONGTEN's] so far which is 12 total. All movies played fine on Mintek 1600 standalone, no skipping/artifacts. Only burned a couple of them at 4x speed, the rest were 2x and I have them marked so I know what is what when I test them in two weeks time for errors in DVDInfoPro.

I was just about to order and noticed that the coupon code wasn't working. Then, it occured to me that it probably expired on Labor Day. Are these still a good deal for the Ritek's? Or does anyone know of any other better deals now? 50 or 100, it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks!
