In 2009 172 million smartphones were sold. In the same year 1.2 billion dumbphones were sold.

Like I said, it is going to be quite a while before the ubiquity of smartphones obviate the need/utility for portable music devices.

And given that damn near everyone on the planet has a cell phone these days, it mean cells phones are replaced about every 5 years. Not very long at all.

but it's great though how big smartphones have grown since the iPhone. The iPhone, whether you like it or not, has been the best thing to happen to smartphones since the invention of the smartphone. It spurred the next smartphone rush which we all love.

Oh I agree completely, but my point was just that I think we are still years away from a situation where the ratio of smartphone to regular phones is reversed.

China alone probably accounts for 3/4 of those dumbphones lol.

"Google is now activating 160,000 mobile phones using its Android software a day, equivalent to 4.8m a month, according to the company's chief executive, Eric Schmidt...

"At those numbers, roughly 15m Android smartphones would be sold every quarter, compared with a worldwide total of 54m sold in the first quarter of 2010, according to the research company Gartner..."

That's a 60% sales growth from just May to June...? Damn...!

Release of Droid Incredible and Evo 4G in that time, along with a refresh at T-Mobile with the MyTouch 3G Slide. Not surprising that they saw a big sales bump.

Wow. Can Microsoft, with their new Apple-esque strategy, even find room? What advantage does Microsoft hold against the other operating systems since they are starting from scratch?

A completely different style interface, xbox/zune integration, better Office integration to name a few. There's always room. The mobile industry is fickle and very fast moving. Just because one company is on top now, doesn't mean they will be a year or two from now.

The advantage hopefully that they've seen what works and what doesn't work, take that info, and make a great Mobile OS.

I don't understand BB people. They are always complaining about their phones, but when I ask why they don't switch, they get all defensive about how BB is the best :\

BB's suck I fell into the hype and got a Storm worst choice ever.

They have memory leaks, Slow browsers. Crash. Poorly built. Crappy OS's. Never going to buy another BB again.

All my friends who have BB's have glitches as well but say they love thier phones but they all secretly hate them.

i prefer a touch screen over any keypad, and the bold has too small of a screen to be my regular phone. that said, the bold is miles ahead of the storm.

I dont disagree that it was a very smart move. however every smart phone that is sold is going to displace a possible ipod touch sale.

Perhaps, but not when you use tactics like forcing consumers to buy a data plan, forcing consumers to sign a contract, etc etc etc. Therew ill be a market for the iPod Touch for kids and even for people who prefer to shop for a better phone.

maybe but most Asians run around with better phones than most people in the US. Phones have always been an international thing, especially around Asia where you spot a phone store almost every block.

I finally got my (canadian) friend to admit the only reason he is such a big blackberry fan is because they come from Canada.

It was really the "perfect storm"... technology finally got to the point where smartphones could be made cheaply (both hardware and service) and Apple used their "pull" to attract the mass market. The smartphone industry was being held back by stagnant operating systems. iOS inspired both Android (at least Googles backing of Android) and WebOS which took up Microsofts slack.
