<< Western Digital doesn't make the most reliable HD.....just a little heads up before you commit. >>

And your IBM does make the most reliable HD? 🙂

Uh, just a little "heads up" -- Western Digital holds the #1 spots for 5400 rpm AND 7200 rpm drives at Storage Review.

But I'm sure you're scientific tests have proved them wrong.

I think the free one day passes you get at the customer service counter has a 5% charge for purchases you make. That's what it used to be a few years ago when I got one to try out.

WD used to have a bad track record on reliability but I think they have improved much recently. That cannot be said for the IBM 75gxp and 60gxp drives which are so bad there is now a class action law suit against them on their high failure rates.

Do anyone know if we have to send in the UPC barcode for the rebate? It doesn't say so anywhere on the rebate form.

Wondering same thing

You don't need to send anything from the WD box. Most Sam's Club rebates are this way. You only send the rebate receipt and the completed Sam's Club rebate form.

You can't purchase it online, but you can go online to www.samsclub.com, take the "Click n Pull", selection, put your zip code in and then search on sku # 743001. This worked for me. If you search that sku w/o going to "Click n Pull", you'll most likely get no hit.

This is what I did before I went to all the trouble of driving 15minutes to pick up the drive. Flaming hot deal.

If you don't have a Sams close by, forget this thread and look for one another time.

I don't know how scientific... You've been around, i've heard several times the number of complaints for Western Digital than I have for Maxtor. On all boards i've been to it's exactly the same way. That is pretty scientific.

Great first post Welshman!!!!

Picked one up tonight, there are PLENTY at my local SAMS. No shipping, easy return, no gift certificate, rebate from a reliable source, the same price as the 40GB right next ot IT!: HOW COULD I RESIST!!!!!

This will be a great upgrade to the 10GB drive I have in my system right now, plus this drive KICKs but performance wise (Source storagereview).

With tax and after rebate my final price will be $132, purty good for 100GB at a local B+M

Thanks!!!!!!

Yeah... great find! I picked mine up from the Morrow GA store.
130$ for 100Gig... can anyone else remember when it was a big deal that 1meg would "only" cost 1$

Lol...

"Unable to Checkout Your current Click 'n' Pull total is below the minimum requirement of $250 (excluding SPECIAL ORDER items)."

Just an FYI.

Muahahahaaha.... That's why I've got two of them on hold for Monday afternoon via "click-and-pull". They can't force me to buy the second one, but they do have to hold the order for me for 3 days. Gives me enough time to schedule the 1-hour trip in to Sam's without worrying that they be sold out.😀

If anyone lives in the Terre Haute, IN area I just called the store and they have 16 left at 11am Saturday, Dec. 1. I'm off to get mine!

Karsten,

I've got a 340MB WD Caviar manufactured Jun '93 I bought for $340 (then $). $1/MB

It is disassembled as a demonstration / prop item!!!

Lets say in Jun '02 $1/GB is widely available.

9 years - 3 orders of magnitude in cost / performance improvement.

*IF* that pace continues, in Jun '11 it will be $1/TB !!!

Whata' country!

FWIW: In 1975, IBM was selling mainframe memory for $120,000/MB.
The *very most* real memory was limited by their 24 bit addressing - 16MB !!!
These days, SDRAM goes for, say, $.12/MB - 6 orders of magnitude in ~25 years.

What a great time to experience!

Don't count on it! Sam's Club inventory is a POS and they very rarely have accurate counts. In addition, they don't even process click-n-pull orders until you go to the service desk and ask for your order. By then, your drives may be long gone. When you place a click-n-pull order, their inventory system does "reserve" the product and quantity in their system, however, they do not physically collect your merchandise. With items like hard drives where they simply place a empty box on the shelf, the invenoty totals are not even monitored. The people at the service desk simply keep placing the emply box on the shelf as long as there is product in their lockup. I know becase this has happened twice with me already even after I received verbal confirmation from the store that my order was pulled. . If you want your drives you better go to Sam's ASAP or you may be SOL.

Got one for $219 + 13.24 tax = $232.24 - $100 = $132.24 after rebate. Look for it on eBay soon.

I remember my wife getting me a 540Meg WD about 7 years ago for $250. At this rate, in another 7 years we'll be getting 2 Terrabytes for less than $150!!! 😀

Thanks, but when I bought it at the B&M, there's only one long receipt with the top part saying "**REBATE RECEIPT**" then follows the regular receipt separated by a line. Do i cut along the line and send in the top portion? Or the whole tihng?

BTW, all drives WILL fail somehow, someday. So it depends on your luck. Get a CDRW to back up all your impt stuff. Norton ghost is really a great software for doing that.

You only need to send the top part of the receipt.Cut the receipt at the line indicated and send the top part (the rebate receipt) with your rebate form and and save the bottom part for your records.

What a deal! The Sam's in Columbia, MO still had 45 in stock just before 8:00 last night. The checkout people were talking about how many had gone out the door already. Two were in my cart under different membership numbers.😀 bumpity, bump, bump...

Picked one up at about 3PM.. there were a few left, I think, but I got one of the last ones... what a fantastic deal, I was planning to pay about the same price for a 60GB drive.. awesome!
