100 dollar bill question

Why do people get single one hundred dollar bills when they go to the bank? If you are purchasing something big like a TV or couch etc I can understand it. However when you are going to Walmart to buy twenty-five dollars worth of food do you really need a hundred dollar bill? Ok we are all impressed by you flashing a hundred around at Walmart.

I was in line today and this women buys twenty-five dollars worth of food and then pulls out a hundred and then acts all pissy because the cashier has to go get a senior cashier or manager to ask them something. Then the lady buying the food wants to get her cahnge back in a specfic order. I about say this is Walmart lady not a bank.

$20's are bad, but the ATM here at work is even worse - It dispenses only 5's.

I live in Rio Rancho NM. There are like 5 casino's within a 60 mile radius. Didn't think of that.

If someone uses a $100.00 bill to buy $25.00 in groceries then the change required is either a 1 50, 1 20, and 1 5 or 3 20s, a 10, and a 5. What exactly is so tough about that? Last I checked the $100.00 bill is legal tender for all debts public and private just like all the other US bills. If the store has a bunch of silly hoops for the clerk to jump through when accepting a $100.00 bill then that is their fault, not the customers.

I went to the MAC at the casino once and the damn thing gave me a C note. All I wanted was like $10 to play nickel slots for awhile and I didn't have any cash, but I figured if I was going to have to pony up a $4.50 surcharge I might as well replenish my cash supply for the next couple of weeks.

So then I had to wait in line at the change counter to get it broken hehe.

I felt pretty stupid at the counter like "Can I have 2 5s, 2 20s and a 50?" Now THERE'S a high roller

It's the store's "fault" for having secure practices to avoid accepting counterfeit C notes.
It's the uppity bitch's fault for paying for $25 in groceries with said C note, to "look rich" or whatever. Hot tip - "rich people" do not buy groceries at Wal-Mart. (She was probably buying discount everything too.)

A lot of bars here (Canada) aren't even accepting $50s let alone $100s. They should have just told her "Sorry, lady, we don't take hundreds. Either go to a bank, or get change from your next 'customer' at the Dirty Dime." 0wned!

Eh. $500 in 20's isnt that thick. Thats only 25 bills. But that was a good joke nonetheless.

I dont know why. The last time I got any money out of a bank I had to wait 5 min as they reported me to the IRS.

The problem with people making small orders with big bills is security. You train your employees to drop in the safe anything bigger than a twenty, and most of their twenties (all twenties after 8PM).

This is why most smaller stores have signs up saying they can't accept anything larger than a twenty.

I don't know what's with you guys that you think someone carries around large bills to "look rich". That's idiotic. I prefer large bills because I don't like carrying a wad of cash; the fewer bills in my pocket the better. Hell, I don't use a wallet or even a money clip anymore. Now I just fold my bills in half over a couple of credit cards and business cards; that's it.

The "hoops" was the cashier needing to get change 'cause you only keep X amount of money (cash & coin) in a draw at all times (usually $200) and you only keep Y amount of money in the store at all times. This is so if the store gets robbed the least amount of cash is lost. The store has to take an educated guess as to how much change (both bills and coins) it will go thru in a day (or weekend w/the banks closed). When people start busting out $100 left and right it really f**ks up the estimated amount of change you'll go thru in a day.

The thread's point wasn't "don't use $100 bills" it was "why do people use $100 bills to buy $25 worth of stuff and demad specific change back?" I think customers assume that stores have an unlimited amount of change on hand that can be accessed by anyone at anytime for any reason so they (the customers) will buy a small amount of stuff and use a big bill so they can "break" it and get lots of change back.

I know when I was a cashier I hated it when people would buy $10 worth of stuff w/a $100 bill. I hated it even more when they'd skip over the 10's and 20's in the wallet's 'cause they wanted to break a big bill.

$5's? I've never seen that. Lowest demonination I've ever seen was $10's.

Alot of ATM's on college campuses give out 5 dollar bills.

I have never seen an ATM that only dispenses fives. I have seen ones that dispened 20's and 5's.

As for getting 100's at the bank. I have gone to many different banks and never have been given
at 100 without me asking for it. Usually 20's, and 50's sometimes if I get alot of money back.

As for legal tender. I know alot of places don't take anything over a 20 after night,
conviencance stores, another problem with 100's at stores like that is that people
will get something small and use a conterfit 100 and the change is all they are looking
for. Thats why some places won't take 100s if the bill isn't big enough.

It's probably a local/regoinal thing. Like others have pointed out, there is so much money floating around Vegas that stores expect to get $100 bills on a regular/daily basis. But if yer geared around making change for $20s and people come in w/$100s it could present an inconvience as the cashier probably doesn't have enough in the drawer to cover it.

I've seen an old guy inline infront of me pull out a $1000 bill to buy $100 worth of medicine before.
Never seen one of those before, never knew they even existed in Canada.
