Desecrating our most sacred symbol is wrong, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal. Having said that, I hope the bring this trial to Utah, let's let this "unbiased" jury deliver justice here!

She'll probably be convicted, because Nebraska law says it's against the law to to "trample upon" a flag and she apparently encouraged her kid to do that. But then she'll appeal, and eventually it'll be reversed because the law is unconstitutional. That decision will be made by a judge, not a jury.

I want to know how it is unconstitional? Freedom of speech is only protected when it doesn't cause a disturbance. AKA Disturbing the peace. By stomping a flag at a military funeral you are disturbing the peace.
If you think it is ok, then go yell FIRE in a theater and try to get off on that one saying it's unconstitutional and let me know how you do.

The Supreme Court disagrees:

it's too bad that disrespect is so cherished in this country.

What are you talking about? 😕 These Westboro people aren't getting any love here or anywhere else.

hello mugs.

i didn't mean it was cherished in this thread. i meant that we have "rights" that protect this disrespect.

You could argue that the mental abuse to the child alone has caused psychological trauma. Just get an expert to look into the child's case. Also since the "church" is making a political statement, you could renege their non-profit rights and then later slap them with tax evasion (I am sure they are doing it to some extent).

I know this is totally OT for this thread, but isn't something like "rescind" more proper here?

I was under the impression that "renege" means "to go back on one's promise".

(I'm trying to learn words for the GRE, so I'm not trying to be an asshat; just want to understand the useage.)

edit: haha, I put the whole post in quotes :/ stupid me.

At a sailor's funeral? Do you have any idea of what the concept of "respect" means?

who protests at funerals?

I agree, there is a time and a place for everything. Why protest at a funeral? Its just not right...

If I was at a funeral for one of my friends or family members and people were standing around protesting, I'd beat their ass senseless.

Yes, and I'd like to think think their non-profit status was revoked a long time ago, but I can't find any evidence of that via Google.

Although they might qualify as a 501(c)(4) even if they don't qualify as a church.

Wow, watch out for that kid when he's old enough to drive. Next thing you know he'll be driving by then, *KABOOM.*

You know, watching the piece by Louis Theroux, I'm thinking these people are just digging themselves into the biggest hole imaginable. Honestly, it's not even worth getting angry at them. Let them do what they want. As long as its only rhetoric, it can't do us any harm beyond making us angry, and that we have direct control over.
