It was obviously a fuckup on our part & Iran seems eager to put it behind us. Obama can play it as a new era in reasonableness & cooperation, a detente of sorts, merely a beginning to better relations in the whole region.

I can't imagine how many conspiracy theories can be spun from this. There's a branch of the media devoted to stuff like that, so we'll see what they can do with it & we'll also see how eagerly Repubs dig for gold from the Israel lobby & headlines from sensationalist media. Maybe a mini-Benghazi, huh?

I hope not. It's tedious at best.

They had a mechanical failure, drifted into Iranian waters, got picked up, and will be released promptly. WWIII averted.

I was listening to CNN on the drive home yesterday as this unfolded and they had Rep. Tom Cotton on. Was amazing to hear how he spun this. Nothing but assumption and conjecture insisting the U.S. should threaten military action against Iran. Was amazing to hear him twist this in his head.

I'll add something to this, as I may have commented earlier to pose a question about it.

The relatively haphazard or deliberate nature of this episode is less determinate than the two school-terror-hoaxes (NYC and LAUSD followed by New Hampshire). Those hoaxes occurred deliberately to coincide with the GOP and Dem televised debates, respectively. I still expect the next one to occur in Nevada or S. Carolina. I do not believe they have ISIS or Iranian origins: it's coming from some campaign supporter on the Right. Typical "Reichstag Fire" operation -- even from schoolboys.

Assume that the American boats "lost their way" and drifted into Iranian waters. Even under that assumption, we cannot assume the that the Iranians (particularly the Revolutionary Guard) acted deliberately, knowing that the action would occur mere hours before Obama's SOTU message.

But an Iranian spokesperson referred to the "rock-throwers" in Congress, as the episode unfolded. They literally described the outcome as a "lesson for the rock-throwers."

Usually, you would expect that something like this, if deliberate, would be designed to undermine Obama. Since our men are well-fed and rested, and they've been returned with the boats, it may have had quite the opposite intent.

They apparently want to pursue the course of the existing nuclear treaty. And -- sure -- it's worth $150B to them. But we could be on the verge of more normal relations with Iran than we've ever had since before 1979.

Meanwhile, some GOP congressman appeared on the news this very morning to spin the story according to lockstep GOP battle-plans: using it to again criticize the Administration.

Those voices are more predictable than the school terror hoaxes. They'll spin any story, push any Falsehood as the Truth, advantage any setback or mishap to sway lemming voters next fall toward their only real goal: reclaiming the Presidency.

I think you're both right in a way. Now that the hardliners are out of power on both sides they can't escalate the official rhetoric to play it up for domestic political purposes.

The grownups are now in control, and it shows. The whining & raving from Iran's hard liners is probably much like what we're getting from Repubs, just in Farsi.
