update: they have been released. (although they're probably in trouble for being in the wrong place.)

http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/12/politics/10-u-s-sailors-in-iranian-custody/index.html

"Ten American sailors are in Iranian custody after two small U.S. naval craft apparently briefly entered Iranian territorial waters, a U.S. senior defense official said Tuesday.

We have received assurances the sailors will promptly be allowed to continue their journey."

Let's hope that is the case.

I suppose we should be grateful they didn't torpedo them the instant they crossed over into their waters.

You'd think it wouldn't be so easy for them to snatch up ships with 50 cals.
In Iranian water, they have the superior force.
Plus, our guys are under ROE where those 50 cals might as well not exist.

And if they come home safe, maybe that's for the best. Instead of a firefight they aren't prepared for.

No where did the article describe Naval craft as being a ship. Also torpedos do not explode on contact like they did years ago, now they are set off by a distortion in the magnetic wave they deploy and these vessel would be not do so. They're far more effective if they explode 50 to 100 feet under a ship creating a large hole in the water that causes the ship to break in half.

Sounds like they will be picked up later tomorrow.

Also it appears, by the Navys reaction, that this was not a planned event and they are anxious to talk to these sailors.

Since the State of the Union should start in a hour or two, I'm almost optimistic that an embarrassment can be turned into nothing more than "interesting news."

There is a faction of hard-liners in the Iranian military -- Revolutionary Guard, I think. That could be how this happened, or it may simply be a mistake of trespass and apprehend.

That they are being returned, announced before the speech, is a good sign.

There are times I can sense this or that country, prime-minister or administration attempting to time some action or announcement according to our own politics, and sometimes it seems as though someone is trying to shoot themselves in the foot.

Not nearly as bad as Kim Jong Un. That guy is a psychopathic and dangerous lunatic. He's gotta go, . . . . ya know . . .

It should be an interesting evening with the CNN feed . . . .

It was obviously a fuckup on our part & Iran seems eager to put it behind us. Obama can play it as a new era in reasonableness & cooperation, a detente of sorts, merely a beginning to better relations in the whole region.

I can't imagine how many conspiracy theories can be spun from this. There's a branch of the media devoted to stuff like that, so we'll see what they can do with it & we'll also see how eagerly Repubs dig for gold from the Israel lobby & headlines from sensationalist media. Maybe a mini-Benghazi, huh?

I hope not. It's tedious at best.

They had a mechanical failure, drifted into Iranian waters, got picked up, and will be released promptly. WWIII averted.

So were these sailors on-board one of those band new Navy new ships that doesn't even work? What a joke the Navy is. It use to be that the Navy had real ships that worked.

I'm a little surprised they are using Riverines that far from shoreline. Makes sense in a way for approaching the smaller fishing vessels and the like in the gulf I guess.

Reports I had heard were they were supposed to be met for refuelling in the area.

What a great attitude. Whenever anything goes wrong, use it as an excuse to tear down everything else. Damned gubmint can't do anything right.

Right wing negativity is tedious at best.

The CNN article has been updated to show a little more of it.

lol.

You're such a partisan hack. When Bush was in office you never hesitated to use anything going wrong as an excuse to tear down government. Now it's a sin? Get real, home sticker.

What a schmuck.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the problem here ?

US troops enter Iran uninvited, so Iran holds them for a few days to check that they aren't spies, then releases them again.

Would the US do any less with Iranian troops who entered the US uninvited ?

That's because you are a rational person who doesn't rely on fear to tell you how to think.

You're smarter than that. Well, probably.
