I've never heard that. I imagine if you switch around to some off-brand that gets stuck in the camcorder, you might run into problems... I think someone has misinformed you. ;)

It's true about not switching brands of tapes. Actually, it's more of the tape "type" than brand. It's a good idea to make sure that if you're using a tape that uses a wet type lubricant, so not switch back and forth between dry lubricant tapes (vise-verse). I guess when you do this, it gums up the mechanism. The two lubricants together make this gummy substance. You could probably try it, but I wouldn't take any chances. If you do switch between tape types, I'd highly recommend a tape cleaner.

BTW.. I use the dry lubricant tapes because more brands use it (Maxell, TDK, some Panasonic, JVC). That's important if I'm on vacation and have limited choices of tape brands. Sony's tapes use the wet lubricant, so if you're using Sony tapes, it's not a good idea to use these JVC's that use the dry lubricant.

This deal is a smoking deal on these tapes. You can spend this much on 3 or 4 tapes at Best Buy or Circuit City. They are excellent quality. It's what I use in my Sony TRV-22. The only downer with eCost is that unless you spend $50 or more, shipping is a little high.

You have to "click-and-find" then scroll down the list to actually add it to your cart.
Once you click through, hit ctrl-f and enter "2249516".

Either type is fine. The important thing is to not switch from a dry to a wet lubricant tape and vise-verse. Have you used any tapes in your camera yet? If so, what brand and model of tape?

I went with a tape that uses a dry lubricant because more brands seem to use this type of tape. Sony seems to be the only tape that uses wet type lubricants in their tapes across the board. If I were to use Sony tapes and I was on vacation, I didn't want to run into the situation of not having any Sony tapes available at a gift shop. Not that I'd plan to run out of tape on vacation, but you know what I mean..

I'll try and find a link telling you which brands of tape use which type of lubricant. Off the top of my head, most use the dry type except for some Panasonic and Sony. They use the wet lubricant. Most of the JVC, Maxell, TDK brands use the dry lubricant.

Edit: Here's a pretty good link about the wet vs. dry lubricant issue with minidv tapes.

Note all the brands of tape that use dry as opposed to wet lubricants. It's kind of like having a Sony Betamax when everyone else is using VHS. ;)

If you want more information, just run a search on google on wet and dry lubrication on minidv tapes.

Personally, I would go with the dry tape because there is less chance of getting another dry type tape when switching brands. The only tape that you really have to steer clear of when you buy tapes is Sony if you choose to go with a dry type tape.

They have sony premium DV tapes for 21.90 also.

Limit 1 on both so I picked 1 of each:

10 Mini DV Tapes (2 Five Packs) w/2 FREE Carrying Cases = 19.00
10 Pack of Sony Premium DV Tapes (DV60PRL) = 21.90

Subtotal: $41.80
Ground Service Shipping: Free
Handling & Processing Fee: $3.95
Sales Tax: $3.77

TOTAL: $49.52

The tapes are for 2 different cameras (one for home one for work)

We switched brands of tapes in the DV cam at work a lot, never had a problem.

I guess you're lucky then. I'm not willing to take that chance with my $700 camcorder.

best buy has these tapes for 35 for 6, so even with $8 shipping it seems like a pretty good deal. but is it really the best deal im gonna see for a while?
If you don't need them right now, don't buy them. This seems to be a usual deal for eCost. It's been that way for the last year at least, give or take a couple of dollars. It's a great deal if you need a tape and your alternative is buying it at Best Buy or Circuit City, but it's not an unusual deal for eCost.

BTW.. These are the exact tapes that I'm using in my Sony TRV-22 and they work great! I purchased this 10 pack with a couple of smart media cards a few months back to get the free shipping for orders over $50 (there is still a handling charge though, but it's not bad). It's the best price I could find on minidv tapes.

These tapes are nice... I bought a set from ecost when I got my JVC GR-DV800.. They work great.. And switching is usually considered a big no-no between the different lubicants.. Very informational thread here guys!
Just a reminder.. ecost adds a handling charge to their orders.. At least on all of mine they have...

Actually I just purchased the 10 pack sony a couple days ago. They are shipping from TN and will be here next week. But to get the free shipping all you have to do is spend over $25 not $50. Once you are over $25 you will only be charged a handling fee of usually $3.95, and if you live in California you also get charged tax. So to get over the $25 I purcahsed a 4 to 4 pin firewire cable for $6.

Also they seem to replenish their quantity daily for these JVC/Sony tapes. So if it goes out of stock today, they will usually will get more by the next day. So no need to worry if it goes OOS.

Ecost has had this deal for months. If it is gone, it will be back. Sams club has ten packs of JVC for $20.
