'10 MB GLK350 vs '09 Acura RDX

Update:

Well, I think we've decided to go with the RDX. Looking to buy used, been working with the local dealer to find one we want. Finally got a call last night about a certified pre-owned 2009 RDX w/ Tech Pkg, Black (really wanted the Dark Gray), Ebony leather, ~9200k miles, $30500, served as a dealership loaner. Going to check it out this weekend. What do you guys think? Any room for negotiation on the price?

Hi Everyone,

The gf is in the market for a new car as her '00 Focus is finally knocking at death's door. We're still at the very early stages of selecting a new car. We know she wants a small SUV, and we sat in pretty much every vehicle in that class at the recent Cleveland Auto Show.

Narrowed down to these two to look into further based on price/packages/styling. RDX seems to be the better value given their technology trim level includes pretty much everything we want, whereas the the GLK with similar options starts to get expensive.

Have not gone out for test drives yet. Any initial thoughts on either?

I'm on the same page with Fenixgoon...although I'm sure the GLK is a great drive...the looks just don't do it for me for something that expensive...looks too much like a forester...but I think I'd rather have the Forester. The RDX plays a different role of an urban SUV with no inclination of going offroad really...but actually driving pretty nicely. My wife and I test drove an RDX a while back when we were considering replacing her car...and she really liked it.

What is the budget? Either of those is a huge step up in price and features from her Focus.

I would consider both of those to be mid-sized SUVs, whereas the Rogue, RAV-4 and CR-V are small SUVs.

Possibly test drive the Highlander and Murano as well?

Acura = Honda = reliable

Mercedes = you'll be driving a loaner car almost as much as the car you purchased

Huge step in price indeed but we were in college when she got the Focus and she bought used. This'll be her first new car. I'd say the budget is around 40K or so, doesn't mean we'd want to spend that much.

GLK is expensive for what you get imo

She didn't like the styling of the Highlander/Murano

I think Descartes just got a GLK. He seems to like it.

I had an MDX. It was ok. It had some problems with the tranny, radio, speakers, headlights, fit and finish but otherwise it was solid.

why not just get a loaded CR-V instead?

Found this comparison site

CR-V is missing a lot of the creature comforts, engine seems underpowered for an SUV as well. Though overall styling seems very similar, will make sure to bring this up.

I can understand underpowered and creature comforts... turbo vs. NA and 240hp vs. 166hp.
but the RDX is heavier by >450 lbs according to your site and is $5-8000 more.

+ Higher insurance on the Acura badge and premium gas for the turbo.

Ultimately it's your (gf's) decision to make. Just thought you should at least check it out before choosing.

how about the lexus rx350 instead? my gf is looking into this segment as well. we went to the philly auto show and she thinks thats her dream car. looks good and the interior is hella nice, but i have no idea how it drives. i prefer the looks and styling of rdx personally

My point was that SUVs are heavy vehicles, we want to be sure that it can move when we need it too.

Higher insurance / premium gas / 5-8K more have already been considered. We understand that this is a luxury vehicle with a turbo.

Yeah we looked at the RX too, but after pricing it out online with the options we wanted, it got wayyy expensive. Styling-wise the RDX is still #1 for her and I'm also a fan of it.

Good comparison. I like the CR-V for value, and it does have a lot of the same base functions (AWD, nav), plus more utility (pass-through, cargo) than the RDX.

If the OP's g/f really wants a lot of power in a small SUV, the V6 RAV-4 is hard to beat - about 265 hp IIRC.

used? i'm hoping my gf gets used because you are right the rx is too fucking expensive new. hell, all cars are too expensive new.

The RAV4 just feels cheap inside- engine is good but interior materials are horrendous.

Mercury Mariner - new 3.0L 240HP for 2009 but no real luxury features - however it is bargain priced. Stereo with Sync is also pretty damn good.

Nissan Murano SL - roomy, great V6 engine, well appointed interior, some luxury content and can be had fully loaded for under $40K. Resale value on these is pretty good as its the best midize 2-row car-based SUV out right now.

Lincoln MKX - big discounts on these and luxury features are included. 260HP V6 and 6spd automatic is included. Roomy, great interior and I love the styling. The front & rear treatment along with the panormaic roof is on-point!

I can't say I'm overly thrilled with our RDX. I traded my TL for it and honestly wish I wouldn't have. The thing isn't BAD per se, it's just not great. Only great thing is it does ride and drive like a car and handles pretty well. Otherwise, its biggest flaw is the fit and finish, there's a new rattle every week I swear. 🙁

What's the point of a small SUV? It's basically the same size as a sedan (except maybe a little more cargo room), slower, and has a bigger engine therefore less gas mileage to boot. It seems like a lose, lose, lose.

Edit: Additionally, all new Acuras look horrendous.

all except the rdx and tsx i think.

i think the perception ( i dont know whether its true or not) is that small SUVs are safer than sedans. my gf likes small SUVs because she gets decent gas milage while riding higher. (currently has an old CRV). w/ her car i was able to carry a bunch of furniture such as entertainment stand and two huge reclining chairs (not all at once)that i otherwise would have had to rent a pickup or borrow someone else's car to carry.
