Clicked assuming I'd see Mini on there and am not surprised.

Love mine (04 S), but they are money pits. Besides the transmission, BMW was also forced to cover the power steering pump for 10+ years after it became a chronic issue that costs $1000 to fix. The multistage cooling fan is very prone to failure/malfunction as well. To add to that, they (mine at least) eat through suspension parts, tires and brakes.

Its a shame too, since it seems like such a simple, raw car -- part of its appeal. Wouldn't expect to spend thousands a year to keep a go kart running would you?

Minis were awesome, then people decided that they couldn't drive without power steering, automatic transmission and a bunch of namby pamby crumplezoneairbagtastic safety features and the fun went out of them.

I don't know whats with the VWs in the states, but it's the only country i know of that thinks VWs have terrible reliability.

Wonder if it has to do with the lack of diesel in the US? The US does get some pretty different engine/transmission options than a lot of the world.

yeah my 14-year old Isuzu had a GM transmission issue at 125k and I reluctantly had to let her go to the yard after even the rebuild didn't work out. Was fine otherwise - my first car earned with blood and sweat. 🙁
