My wife and I were just talking about taking a short family vacation to Chicago.

Scratch that idea!

Guess you've never been to a very large city like Chicago, NYC, etc before. The cities are HUGE, and are basically made up of many other smaller districts so densely populated that they could nearly be cities themselves (or at least towns). So really when you read that the crime rate of Chicago is high, that doesn't mean all of Chicago is high... it means there's certain areas where the crime is incredibly high, and it's pretty obvious which areas those are as no outsiders go there. The areas where tourists go aren't that bad, even at night as long as you stay on populated streets and avoid the empty dark alleys. There's no real reason to avoid the large cities based on crime rate as they really are very large.

Now, when you see a large crime rate on a small city (like Gary, IN which is right NEXT to Chicago) then you know that whole city needs to be avoided. And I know on a personal level how awful Gary in particular is. But Chicago is fine.

I was hanging out with a friend last night (A Chgo officer) and he said it was pretty bad this weekend on the South and West sides. In one instance, a marked police car was responding to shots fired and passed by a group of guys who mistakenly thought the marked car was coming after them. The group took shots at the passing cops and started to flee. A second, unmarked car, heard the call for shots fired at the first car and responded to the call. A second group of guys, again mistakenly thinking they were the target of the unmarked car which was passing by, fired on the car. In total, you had two police cars responding to shots fired and were in turn fired upon by their unintended target.

wtf...

Your post is probably in humor, but seriously. This crap doesn't happen in the typical tourist'y parts of town. And it doesn't happen in the 'burbs. It's in a part of town that you only get into by accident. And then you promptly turn around and GTFO.

When you see windows barred up, trash everywhere, disassembled cars in medians, and a liquor store/pay day loan cashing on every other block...you know you've taken a wrong turn.

Yes, I was joking.

If we really wanted to go somewhere to be randomly killed we'd try Detroit.

One Natalee Holloway is worth 50 dead black people. So if there'd been around 50 dead black folks in Chicago over the weekend (plus or minus a few), there "probably" would have been at least some Nancy Grace action going on.

there's black people and then there's ghetto black people.
i wouldn't mind if all the ghetto black people in the US shot each other up because of gang rivalry.

I dunno... I went driving around Detroit the last time I was there a few months ago. Holy cow that place is scary. Drove up and down 8 mile from Van *** street all the way to the water, back down 94, and exited somewhere that took me past the Detroit City Airport. I remember fondly the movie Robocop from my childhood. And that's pretty much how everything looked. Every 3rd house was completely abandoned. Buildings that look like Berlin in 1945. The only industry apparently is pawn shops, pay day loans, and liquor stores.

I heard an interview on NPR with the newest Detroit mayor (not that Kwame Kilpatrick disgrace). He openly described his city as being made up of 1/3rd urban blight (in his words, ready to be razed), 1/3rd ghetto, and maybe 1/3rd somewhat ok. The city does not even have a single chain grocery store within the city limits. It's almost laughable how bad that place is, if it weren't such a serious problem.

It's a shooting gallery here. More info with maps/location dates. Pink dots are for shootings since April 22nd.

Summer Shootings In Chicago, 125 dead (between the start of Memorial Day weekend on May 26, and the end of Labor Day on Sept. 1). 2008

Latest crime in my neck of the woods (Orland Park, IL) was a burglary last week. 😱

But, they passed those laws because they would have an effect on the gang violence. Are you saying our politicians lied to us?

I don't blame the politicians. Usually they're just doing what the public wants. "Oh no! There are a lot of gang members shooting each other! Do something to protect us or else you won't get reelected." They do the easiest thing there is to do.

Eh. It's just the way it is in lots of cities. There are very specific parts of town that everyone knows are dumps. And you don't go there. Period. Usually all of the shootings you hear about on the news happen in those areas and to people that live/hang out in those places. Don't live or hang out there? No problem.

It irks me when people make asinine statements like yours. You don't know a damn thing about that area or the residents who live there, it's a small majority of people in that area who have no respect for the law or others who make life a living hell for the people in those sections of the city. There are millions of people in america who work hard and want a better life, a better future and a better way of maintaining than what they currently have, so unfortunately until that happens they have no choice but to go to and live in those dumps that people only hear about on the news.

I'm not picking on just you, but there a lot of ignorant people on this forum who love to poke fun and make sly racial jokes whenever articles like these get posted. I wonder how some of these people would feel if you grew up fearing for your life just walking home from school or finding out the classmates you used to talk and joke with got killed over the course of a weekend by just sitting on a front porch. Let's talk about being held up at gunpoint while coming home from an after school job or trying to survive a drive-by when you were doing nothing more than just hanging out with your friends playing softball at the park. I guess I should have just pulled myself up by my bootstraps as a kid back then and moved out of the hood with my paper route income back then.

"Bring our troops home" needs to take on a whole new meaning.

I was watching one of the history channel shows about one of these crime ridden cities and they decided to really crack down on the drug and the gang problems. The police went into know areas and flushed them all out. It seemed like a good idea at the time but all it did was move the crime to the good neighborhoods and it ended up being worst because regular folk were now getting caught in the cross fire. Best thing to do is to leave it as and try to prevent it from spreading.
