Oh and to answer the OP's question "is this normal and why doesn't it make the news?"

If you want the answer it's simply because most of us don't care. It's black on black crime. They want to shoot each other up, fine. Just keep it in their own neighborhoods. The police will do a little homework on it, but overall it's just not worth the risk (or reward) to bring anyone to justice. We're so numb to "male black man, age 16-25" being shot that it's just another day for most of us.

If it had been little white girls aged 3-15 that were shot & killed you can bet it would be across every major newssource.

yeah i wouldnt bet on that

Well gang banger shooting style (gun turned sideways and pointed sort of down) doesn't lend itself to high levels of accuracy. They aren't usually intending to hit others...it's just sort of collateral damage for being a shitty shot at the intended target.

Eh. It's just the way it is in lots of cities. There are very specific parts of town that everyone knows are dumps. And you don't go there. Period. Usually all of the shootings you hear about on the news happen in those areas and to people that live/hang out in those places. Don't live or hang out there? No problem.
Then the hapless tourist turns on the wrong street. BAM,BAM,BAM.

Or the not so happy hubby pops the wife.... the crips did it.

Still not usually the case. These are stupid thug/gang disputes over money/drugs/women/stupid shit. In the years I've lived here I can only remember one time out of hundreds that white people were shot/killed by a black person.

Restrictive Gun Laws only protect gangs and criminals, because it prevents law abiding citizens from defending themselves. Gun laws won't magically remove firearms from the hands of criminals, these incidents are pretty much proof.

So the handgun ban is working?

A handgun ban would be more effective if guns weren't so easily aquired.

In Chicago McDonalds, all you got to say is 'super-load it', and you get a 9mm with 15 rounds of ammo (provided you can show proof age...they aren't offered to kids <13.)

interesting that you use the term "law abiding citizens", because i'd bet $20 that none of the victims were such. these incidents prove nothing about gun control.

anyway, sad story. was also a particularly bad weekend in Baltimore. about a dozen shootings and 3 deaths. summers are dangerous (well, more dangerous) if you're in the drug trade. maybe cities should be banning BBQ's and promoting AC rather than worrying about guns.

My wife and I were just talking about taking a short family vacation to Chicago.

Scratch that idea!

Your post is probably in humor, but seriously. This crap doesn't happen in the typical tourist'y parts of town. And it doesn't happen in the 'burbs. It's in a part of town that you only get into by accident. And then you promptly turn around and GTFO.

When you see windows barred up, trash everywhere, disassembled cars in medians, and a liquor store/pay day loan cashing on every other block...you know you've taken a wrong turn.

Heh. No kidding. The shootings in my area happened at a "cookout" too. It's pretty safe to say that if you aren't a) buying, b) selling drugs, or c) partying with large groups of people who fall into the above groups.... you probably have a relatively low risk of being shot.

One Natalee Holloway is worth 50 dead black people. So if there'd been around 50 dead black folks in Chicago over the weekend (plus or minus a few), there "probably" would have been at least some Nancy Grace action going on.

I don't know...do you really think 50 dead black people would get her attention? I was thinking more like 100 myself.

It's also pretty rare in the parts of town that aren't south or west. The downtown area and north side are generally safe as far as major cities go.

I laugh at any tour-on who lives in fear thinking they'll be gunned down wandering around Millennium Park or walking down Michigan Avenue.
