How odd it is that a person could be called a very patriotic soldier and in the same breath be a person who loved Trump, who is anything but a patriot, a living breathing personified contradiction of the term.

I'm pretty sure Trump supporters are supporters of the fantasy "Old America". Their vision of the perfect 1950's white, patriarchal America, where wives knew their place and stayed at home, to keep house, and no one dared speak up about racial/sexual discriminations, etc...

In MAGA, the "Again" part is a return to the ideal straight, white, male past...

Well, they should take a closer look at the size homes, quality of groceries, number and quality of cars, and cost of "stuff" even their idealized models had access to. (Hint: small, mediocre, ~1, and "a lot")

Economically, the 1950's were great. It was the post war boom. Wages outpaced inflation, housing was incredibly affordable, unemployment was low, there wasn't a market downturn in the whole decade.

The median American is much better off today than the median 1950s American.

Heck, at the start of the 50s, 1/3 of homes lacked indoor plumbing and that only fell to 1/6 in 1960!

Well, I guess it's a relational thing. In absolute terms things might not have been that great, but the _relative_ situation for white males vs everyone else, and for the US vs a world that had just been bankrupted and nearly-destroyed by a world war, was pretty sweet.
 
It's one thing to talk about creature comforts but it's another to talk about economic opportunity. Not the same thing.

We could have record level poverty is not made better by, air conditioning exists.

This is kind of misleading. The top rate was officially high, but there were many more uncapped loopholes for rich people to reduce their effective taxation rate. The only people who might have paid this high of a rate on income in that bracket might have been lottery winners.

But yes, there should be more tax brackets at the top, they should be higher, and current loopholes very rich people use to avoid taxes should be closed (eg, carried interest, limited partnerships, differential/preferred treatment of capital gains/dividends).

Yes it is both correct and inaccurate. The only rates that really matter are effective rates, and they definitely weren't paying anywhere near 91%.

And there are always going to be assholes who try to push the rules: that's why we need enforcement and regulations to come down hard on those cases.

Most of the loopholes were write-offs for spending. Encouraging the millionaire class to spend rather than horde INCLUDING EMPLOYEE WAGES. This is what gave us the incredible growth in the 50s and 60s and even 70s in ACTUAL wages and grew the worlds largest middle class. This is why wages stagnated precisely when the top tax bracket was dropped and write-offs eliminated.

Now much of the horded wealth is in the stock market... which explains its explosive growth since the 80s.
