Puts the war with iraq and the war on terrorism in perspective, huh?

yeah the deaths from war are just a drop in the bucket. more reason to go to war.

on a more serious note, this highlights the success and importance of preventive medicine. a brochure and a condom costs a whole lots less than a lifetime of AIDS pills and hospital fees. not to mention welfare and loss of productivity. africa is doing down the tubes because no one uses the condom. that's a senseless waste of life. but you won't see the anti-war human shields going to africa to hand out condoms... nope, not sexy enough.

Who is this predicted by, and what is their agenda? I very seriously doubt that many people will die. These are the same types that predicted aids would be a huge epidemic in the USA by the 90's. Guess what, they were wrong.
Education is the key. Why is nobody jumping up and down and clapping over the President's proposals to fight aids in Africa? I'll tell you why: because it's a good idea and HE thought of it, not them.

An epidemic can in no way be compared to war. War is preventable, but the difference is, both sides have to WANT to prevent it. Iraq (Saddam, really) doesn't want to prevent war, so war is inevitable.
Everyone wants to prevent aids, it's just a matter of spending money in the proper places and educating the primitives that keep infecting themselves.

its actually really sad how it spreads in Africa. IF i remember correctly if a man gets infected there is some belief that if he rapes a young girl than he will get rid of it. Obviously it just spreads it further. They should take some initiative like they did in Thailand where they made a hospital for AIDS patients and made into a museum. At the same time they should have a national campaign for condom use or even better abstinance. Or they get it from going to a brothel and give it to their wives or any partner they have had.
Its really interesting though how the national and domestic policy of the Bush administration differs to prevent STDs. Abroad they preach condom usage and here in the states they say Abstinance is the way to go.

does this estimate assume that the death rate is going to remain constant?
what happens in 2020? why does it stop then?
It doesn't stop, it goes higher. 2020 is around the time that all our best antivirals cease to be effective because they were given at no or low cost to uneducated populations in developing countries, the same populations who haven't learned how to use a condom or soap after 20+ years and tens of millions of dollars trying to teach them.

Antivirals need to be taken in an almost religious manner at precise intervals. These people don't even know how to tell time. If they're not take at precise intervals, the likelihood of drug resistence by viral mutation goes higher.

We give our best antivirals to these populations on one big article of faith that we will develop better ones to which HIV is not resistant. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

You guys do realize that a significant portion of HIV carriers are maternally transmission cases (i.e. they got it because they were born). Blood transfusion cases are also very popular.

And in least developed areas of the world...there are a majority of people who don't understand the concept of 'virus' or how to prevent its transmission.

Also, as a side note...condoms are not 100% effective against stopping the transmission of aids and are significantly less effective against hepatitis. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Actually, the chances are that one person posting in this thread has HIV or hepatitis and doesn't know it.

<--works for a pharmaceutical company that fights infectous disease including HIV and HBV...and is damn proud of it!

Not in any developed nation, no, unless you consider a fraction of a percent "significant".

Well since condoms are not 100% effective against anything, your statement constitutes a universal truth and is thus meaningless.

basically what you people are saying is that you dont feel sorry for people who bring their own demise upon themselves.

i agree.
The sad fact is that the majority of aids cases, especially in the most afflicted countries, are a result of ignorance about aids.

true. i guess instead it should be people who knowingly bring their own demise upon themselves. (i.e. people who drive too fast/talk on cell phones while driving/dont wear seatbelts)

Ignorane of AIDS in Africa especially is because of the governments. The religious institutions in alot of countries pressure the government not to educate people about condoms and such, because "sex is wrong".
