The only reason, I repeat the ONLY reason, people are in here defending this is because their specific religious beliefs are in alignment. Meaning: evangelicals who ignorantly believe that contraceptives = abortion.

No, I am an aetheist, and I believe that people should have the privilege to buy and use contraceptives, but I also believe that no private company should be forced to sell something that they don't want to sell. Whether that be contraceptives or healing crystals.

This is reconcilable because you can alway buy from someone else. No pharmacy has a true monopoly in this country.

The power company refusing to sell power is not equivalent. Most Power companies have a government mandated monopoly.

Again, they are imposing there own religious views on people by not making these products available.

Nope, not even close.

They are not imposing their views on you. You are always free to take BC if you want.

What they are doing is NOT catering to your views.

You, however, are trying to impose YOUR views on them.

Fern

If they were the only business in the area who sold these items, would they be imposing there views than?

Not in my opinion.

They are not preventing anyone from using BC.

They simply arn't offering that service (product).

They aren't stopping anyone else from offering that service (product) either.

The most oft repeated objection to this pharmacy's policy is that people may be inconvenienced - they will have to drive farther or think ahead and order (on-line etc) a few days beforehand.

What if their reason for not offering the product was about something unrelated to religion or morals, would so many still insist that the company's be forced to sell because of our convenience? I.e., our own personal convenience trumps any freedom they have? E.g., you have freedoms, unless I find them inconvenient for me?

Personally, I don't think that their reason is even relevant. Look, I'm not Catholic, I have no problems with BC (as they do). Obviously I don't agree with their policy, but I do recognize their right to have the policy.

I don't see this as partisan, not at all.

To me it does invole a conservative principal - not having the government on your back and micro-managing your business.

But I suspect Vic, who enjoys schooling us on what terms like "liberal", "conservative", or "socialist" etc really mean might say that allowing the pharmacy the freedom to not sell is actually "liberal", and not conservative. (I'm guessing here :) )

Exactly. It seems some people here ASSume that if you don't see a problem with this it's because of "morality" when it isn't.

Fern: I agree with you. I don't like it - I think it's ridiculous but if that's what they want to do for religious purposes, well, then that's what they get to do. Here's hoping no one shops there anymore. I think the question becomes then, "well, what else won't they dispense?" If someone digs up a passage in the book of Judges that says:

"Lo, and the Lord smote all of those with low blood sugar. For those who don't sip on the milk of the Pancreas truly belong in the kingdom of Heaven."

And they stop selling insulin?

My question to CAD was unrelated to the topic.

I don't have a problem with this either as long as it doesn't catch on. If it did catch on and people have to drive around to several pharmacies or go to another town to get their BC pills then there are inevitably going to be unwanted pregnancies and the word "inconvenienced" doesn't even remotely apply.

Private Organization, selling what it pleases. There's no right to convenience.

End of argument.

Except it takes a state licensed pharmacist to run that business.

In my state I don't think this would float for the reasons I've stated earlier.

You have to have a liquor license from the state/locality to serve/sell liquor - does that mean they have to sell all types of alcohol?

So are pharmacies by law required to keep stock of any meds? So if you have prescription, they have to fill it?

If not then it's a non-issue; the owner can decide whichever meds to stock. It's no different than if they are out of stock - they're not obligated to have in stock what you need.

I do take an issue with holy roller refusing to give out meds at CVS... that's your fucking job.

Exactly. If you work for a place that sells something offensive to you - get a different job. However, if you own the business, you do not have to stock any product you don't want to sell.

That's all well and good if your only selling groceries.

If your licensed as a pharmacy then you should be willing to sell whatever the prescription calls for. If your not, then get out of the pharmacy business instead of trying to force your PERSONAL beliefs on everybody else.

Don't you see that you're trying to force YOUR personal beliefs on someone else?

That reminds me of an old joke.

If you drink, don't park. Accidents cause people.

Lots of private businesses engage in commerce that requires licensing. No difference.

I live in an area where there are towns that don't have a doctor/hospital/pharmacy. The last think we need to worry about is driving 30 or 40 miles, one way mind you to be told by the only pharmacist in town that he won't fill a BC prescription because he would feel guilty. Good God, you'd think he personally prescribed the pill and was forcing the pill down thew oman's throat???

Give me a break!!

And if one of those business wants to try and deny me service based on nothing more then a personal belief then we can look at their license also.

They're not denying you service. They don't carry the product you seek.

Just keep telling yourself that.

They admit they don't believe in contraceptives. I'm not asking them to use them, I just don't want there beliefs trying to trump mine.

Hopefully your area will get telephone service soon.

It's just as much a bummer if they are closed or out of inventory.

You can get birth-control via mail order drug stores.

And if you live in a small town that is a lot more private than the local RX.

Laugh all you want about us yokels out here living in the sticks. Parts of this town don't even have curb and gutter or asphalt streets. I like it here though.

The last time we ran out of contraceptived was when we had that convention with all the big city out-of-state'rs in town. ;)

Yeah. I was just joking with you.

I like the rural areas too.

I live in the Western part of the state, if you're in the mountains I'm pretty near you.

I'm in Henderson Co., it's grown too fast for my liking. I wish it was more rural.
