Was anybody fortunate enough to get his phonenumber successfully transferred from original carrier to Vonage. I joined Vonage on Dec 11 and till now that hasn't been done. Am paying two bills both Vonage and existing carrier (comcast) for last couple of mnths. What pains me is that both have no incentive to expdeite the process as it is me the consumer who is stuck paying both.

I sent my change-over letter to Vonage on 12/23 and received notification last night that they were in the process of swapping me from Verizon to Vonage. I'll let you know when it actually happens.

Under Transfer status, for me it says the following

Updated Date: Number Transfer Progress History:
December 11, 2003 Awaiting Letter of Authorization
December 16, 2003 Letter of Authorization (LOA) Received
December 30, 2003 Transfer Sent to Carrier

Patrickj and Scyber: When you say that they are in "process of swapping" or "working to switch your carriers" does it mean you received any further notification after "Transfer sent to carrier".

Does anybody know how many days it takes from "Transfer Sent to Carrier" to any subsequent notification or actual transfer.

My transfer is now complete. It took about 30 days, but my request occurred prior to Christmas. I set it all up last night. No problems so far. I am curious though...does adding the VOIP device to my network (behind my router) introduce any security risks that I should be aware of?

My transfer request was sent to verizon on 12/19. Unfortunately the info you quotes isn't on my Dashboard, but I confirmed with the CSR last night. FOr some reason they don't put that info on your dashboard unless you request the number transfer when you sign up. I used the vonage service for a few months prior to requesting my transfer.

But there is a "hidden" fee for cancellation. To date, I've saved $120 over Qwest, not including the 2 free months I've gotten for refering friends.

Thanks I can't wait to cancel Qwest which is around $26/mo (half of which are TAXES and FEES).

Will Vonage work ok with my ReplayTV?

I was seriously going to get Vonage service, up until a few days ago. I attempted to sign up through their website. I kept getting "unspecified errors" when submitting the initial form (where you enter your name, address, etc.). One of the fields is "current phone number". As I do not have a home phone, I entered nothing. There is no mention that this is a required field. Well, just for fun I tried entering something and what do you know, it worked. Then, on to the next page, for payment. I entered everything and hit submit, and immediately the pages comes back with a laundry list of problems (like invalid CC #, already expired, etc.) The form did not process long enough for it to actually try to authorize the card, so I know that wasn't the problem. But, just for fun, I tried a different card. Same thing. Three cards, same problem. Oh, and each time I had to go through the whole signup again, and each time on average there were 4-5 times where it failed with an "unknown error", it only worked at random. So, I sent an email to their customer service informing them of the problem with their site. They told me that if I called them on the phone they would be happy to sign me up. First, that's kind of funny if you think about it, but whatever. Secondly, I'm a little concerned about paying for service OVER THE INTERNET when the company's own website doesn't work. I informed them of my concerns, they simply sent me back the standard "call us and we'll be happy bla bla bla" message. Well, I didn't call them. What I did do is register over at their "public" forums (www.vonage-forums.com). I posted a message about how the web sign up didn't work, and that someone should probably look into it. Within an hour or two, my post had been deleted. Hmm, that's interesting, I thought, so I posted another message asking them not only about the site, but about my deleted post. They then proceeded to delete that post AND ban not only my account, but my IP!

What's my point? Obviously this company has some seriously lacking customer service. What kind of confidence does it inspire in you when their own website doesn't even work? Or how about the way they ban me from their forums for pointing this out? They are certainly never going to get any of my money now. That's all I have to say about that.

Does anyone have any info on whether the retail kit currently offers two-months free & activation free?

Got mine from CC, with 2 free months, $99.99 for the Motorola Box, and now it's$29.99 a month for unlimited local and long distance. My monthly bill has gone from $420, to $210. ($110 due to having to keep BS to keep my DSL line.)

I looked into that, but it's not a viable option for me at the moment. If only BS would just hurry up and let us pay for DSL only every month instead of also forcing us to take their POTS.

P.S. Wth is wrong with the forums? Is anyone having to scroll to the right a crap load just to read the messages in this thread??

My sister just signed up with them three weeks ago. The number is still not switched over. BS is what she's been getting from the CS. Who needs a home phone anyway if you've got a good cell phone.

Teach your sister to listen to what people tell her. They tell everyone that it takes at least 20 business days which comes out to at least a month.

That's if you're lucky though--I've been with them since March and they or BellSouth have yet to switch my number over. Both sides keep giving me a run around. Vonage says that they have all my documents and are waiting for BS. BS customer reps act like IP Telephony is some sort of voodoo that we peons shouldn't be messing with because it could lead to rashes, vomitting, migraines, etc. etc.

Umm... Ok, that's helpful... you think maybe you can explain why??

Call me silly but, I tend to base purchase decision on a little more than advice like "That other thing just sucks!! cause it does!, it's sucks really!!"

Vonage's service for our house was lousy. Frequent call deteriorations, outages, and they admitted that they couldn't do anything about it. Just a PSA, so YMMV.

Was checking into using Vonage to replace Verizon.

I found that the phone numbers in my present Area Code are NOT transferable from Vonage.
If I get a new number it would be essentially unlisted, so it might be hard for old friends to reach me.

Might be good as far as reducing the number of "survey" and "charity" calls.

I don't think I am ready to switch over.

I'm looking into getting a VoIP service - anyone with Vonage that would like a referral bonus? PM me please. :)

Edit: Decided to go with BroadVoice...
