1.5 gigs 2100 or 1 gig 3200

I have 512 of DDR 2100. Would it be better to get a 1gig stick of 2100 and have 1.5 gigs. Or get rid of the 512 and get 1 gig of 3200?

Found the info on motherboard HERE

The Rig in my sig is my old one, the new one is a P4 3Ghz

get the 1 gig pc3200

edit: and if you do go the pc3200 route, and if your motherboard supports dual channel memory, then get 2*512 sticks

why should he get a gig of 3200 when his computer wont be able to take advantage of the speed. he would be better off with 1.5 of 2100.

well, i didn't follow the link to see what cpu he had. either way though, 1.5 gigs really doesn't help much, if any. if he's a gamer, having more than a gig of ram can sometimes actually slow games down. if he does more of memory hogging apps, then he might benefit from the 1.5 gigs. if not, then getting the pc3200 will allow him to upgrade his cpu later on, without having to upgrade ram too.

No, don't have any proof. This is just what I believe at the current time, and is only my opinion. He's welcome to get what he wants (1.5 GB or 1 GB), I was merely suggesting what I would do.

Well no offnese but your opinion is complete bunk. This isn't the win9x kernel where more than 512 megs of ram can actually create problems and slowdown.

In his position i'd go 1.5 pc2100. Even if he goes A64 later down the road, you only see about a 5% decreae in preformance from pc2700 to pc3200 ....so probably 10% or so going from pc3200 to pc2100....

In situations like this i always say maximize your dollar. if that pc2100 is cheaper (especially since its a 1 gig stick) go for that because DDR doesn't seem to be going away for a whiile and 1.5 gigs is no small amount.

I heard somewhere (I have a problem with quoting/remembering places) that over 1GB of ram in more than 2 dimms will actually slow down any system significantly (Probably not for Dualies). I thought it shouldn't be a problem for AMD 64 systems but apparently it was. If anyone else has read the article feel free to link it for him..

The slowdown that you are talking about is caused by there being more than two dimms, not by there being more than a gig of ram. The more dimms, the harder the memory controller has to work, because it has to communicate with more dimms, so it will often run the memory at a slower speed or at looser latencies than would be achieved with two dimms.

and get the 3200 ram, anything slower than that is not really worth the money.

ooh if he has a P4 then screw the 512 megs of ram...better not to starve that thing because it cripples much easier than an Athlon
